Good Boys Movie Review R Rated Comedy

Good Boys movie poster

A simple story about three young boys trying to be cool and being invited to a party where there will be kissing. The Good Boys cast and trailer make the movie look like a funny little coming-of-age story. Where some tweens begin to branch out and network while touting underlying moralistic messages. For one thing, they’re exposed to older kids, cooler kids, and misinformation about sex and life. An updated version using the formula for Ferris Bueller but using thirteen year old’s instead. Many films have done this type of punchline before. Booksmart is a good example of the style of a movie that utilizes the journey of any youngster as its vehicle. By comparison, the two films have little in common. Book Smart gives you a sense of realism and Good Boys is purely dumb fun.

Where to Watch the Good Boys Movie

Goodboys Movie has a Stellar Cast

The Good Boys’ cast and their performances are really great. Especially considering the context they constantly have to deal with. Jacob Tremblay, Keith L. Williams, and Brady Noon play Max, Lucas, and Thor. Their antics generally revolve around the discovery of a large arsenal of sex toys that belong to one of their parents. Used for dressing up and disguising, it completes the main thread of jokes for the entire movie.

Alongside a good dose of acquiring drugs by accident, I was left feeling strange watching Max adorn his new love with a set of anal beads as a necklace. Subsequently, she and anyone else that picks them up, dry retches, as they apparently smell like sh*t. If you’re expecting a film you can watch with your tween, perhaps think about the questions that may be raised. Certainly, Good Boys is aimed at adults, not kids and I’m glad I put it on to watch by myself. It’s not unlikely that impressionable youngsters will end up seeing this film. And while the story bends towards themes of being yourself and having friendships that evolve there is a scene as a parent I personally hated. It involved a busy highway crossing challenge.

Dumb Fun or Dangerous Example In The Good Boys Movie

While funny at times, the trio in the Good Boys cast is made to sway between being overtly naive and somewhat streetwise. They are thirteen and with that age comes risk-taking. Mostly, it’s easy to see the funny side of the film’s narrative. However, I could have done without seeing tiny people playing chicken on a highway. The three boys are on the run from teenage girls and endeavor to cross a busy road. To clarify, it comes across as incidentally cartoon-like but that’s because as adults we know how stupid that would be to try.

Do they make it safely to the other side? Without being hit by a semi-trailer or one of the dozen cars that speed on past? You’ll have to watch it and see. Those with a penchant for inappropriate comedy will be in their element with Good Boys, that’s all I’m saying. And as a matter of fact, there is nothing wrong with that. There are many funny moments within the 89-minute runtime.

I really liked the appearance of Steven Merchant in Good Boys as a possible buyer for a rare game card the lads have. His adoration for a CPR doll with an exotic appearance is one of the highlights of the film overall. Director Gene Stupnitsky and his co-writer Lee Eisenberg are both well known for comedy movies like this. Together they wrote Bad Teacher and Year One. More importantly, if that’s the type of movie you like, that’s exactly what you’ll get. Good Boys doesn’t raise the bar for filmmaking. Without a doubt, this one is a good time passer with a couple of good gags.
