Released in 2019 at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival In the Quarry has been given a release in the UK. “The Quarry” is a Spanish-language film that showcases the types of horror and chilling thriller tales most of us like. “En El Pozo” is a Spanish ideological film by co-directors Bernardo Antonaccio and Rafael Antonaccio. It also marks the duo with its first feature-length directorial debut. “The Quarry” not only gives you a rough ride through life’s deepest holes but also highlights the many notions ingrained within societies’ own sometimes oppressive structure.
While some might be looking at those ideas and steadily increasing their gait towards steering a wide berth, you needn’t worry. The narrative is straightforward and gritty enough that even if you don’t want to look deeper you’ll still enjoy the story. All the themes touch on stereotypes within gender roles and this is one aspect where it truly shines.
Not all of the film’s plot devices work as effectively as others, however, the message and subtext are clear. In the Quarry is a slow burn with only the tiniest of indications there is trouble brewing during its first two acts. Still, this simmering contempt is easy to see because the performances of the ensemble cast of just 4 people do an excellent job of portraying exactly what they are supposed to.

Small Towns VS City in The Quarry Movie
Alicia brings her city boyfriend to a small reunion of sorts at the quarry. She and her childhood sweetheart Tincho used to frequent the site as kids. They are joined by Tincho’s brother, Tola, the type of fun-loving, pleasantly-natured guy who’s always at an event like this. Whether or not Alicia intended to rekindle whatever romance the two had going on will forever remain a mystery, but you may find yourself wondering if she was looking for an escape hatch from Bruno.
Bruno doesn’t fit in, doesn’t relate to the appeal of the quarry, is anti-fishing, and is a completely impatient city dweller. He’s also increasingly moody about the bubbling sexual tension lurking nearby. Already the odd one out, he sabotages the music, dislikes the fresh air, and instantly decides to leave at the first opportunity forcing Alicia to come with him.
When the car won’t start, Bruno is quite worked up by the time they get back to camp.
The camerawork is crisp and steady and showcases the serenity of a location such as this. Its dangers and its perils are pointed out almost philosophically by the brothers. As the day wears on, it’s easy to see that Bruno is at a breaking point. Especially when his finger-pointed reproach towards not only his girlfriend but the brothers as well; is all but proven when he picks up her phone. Jealousy, mistrust, and violence are on the agenda for The Quarry and you have to stick around to see how it all plays out.
Dark and Chilling Thrillers
Watch In The Quarry if you like stories that superficially make you think there’s not much. Then they end up staying on your mind for days. There’s plenty to see in the finale as it explodes into its closing act.
