Netflix Recommended Movies To Watch

No matter how many people complain about Netflix, the platform is still the leader of the pack. As they are currently sitting at 161 million Netflix subscribers, it makes sense that it is still a juggernaut in the industry. Still, that doesn’t mean it is the only platform people use. Personally, I flick between Amazon Prime, Stan, and now Binge here in Australia. This is a list of Netflix-recommended movies for those looking for a sure thing. If you’re just a casual viewer of movies, the choices can be overwhelming. Even with the new helpful categories listings, it’s hard to make a choice on which film to see next. Segments like; Popular on Netflix, The Top 10 Movies in Australia, or the USA and, Hidden Gems it can be hard to know what to go for.

These movies are also recommended by thousands of people who watched them as well as the Mother of Movies. What’s good on Netflix? Try some of these highly-rated films released in 2019 and 2020. All films listed are streaming on both Australian and USA Netflix. For more countries please see JustWatch for missing information.

Netflix USA & AU Top Movies Released in 2019 & 2020

According to a few movies and series databases, these movies have the highest satisfaction across rating sites. Furthermore, Mother of Movies will add my favorite films in each section.

Netflix recommended movies - Extraction 2020
Chris Hemsworth and Rudhraksh Jaiswal as Tyler and Ovi in Extraction.

For Something with Action: Extraction

Starring Chris Hemsworth and Rudhraksh Jaiswal, Extraction follows Tyler, a soldier for hire. Released in April 2020, if you’re looking for a Netflix new release this might tick all your boxes. The narrative sees Tyler go to what is deemed an impenetrable city to rescue Ovi.

Compared with films like John Wick, Extraction has a fast pace. The film spends a lot of time on close-up combat scenes, which is a highlight for the film. As far as realism goes, I would be leaving my fact-checking brain segment in the box it came in. It’s great if you know how different guns function and what the Bangladesh culture is really like but don’t apply that knowledge here.

Extraction is a movie on Netflix for people who like busy storylines. There is a lot going on with double-crosses, lots of fighting, and tonnes of action. This film is cited as having the largest audience watching a premiere in Netflix’s history. More than 90 million people have given this a crack. If you haven’t maybe it’s time to add yourself as a number. Especially given that the movie has a sequel in work with Joe Russo returning as one of the writers.

If you don’t like the sound of Extraction, John Wick 3 is also in the top movies recommended to watch on Netflix.

Uncut Gems Movie Trailer

Uncut Gems | Official Trailer HD | A24
Uncut Gems 2019 starring Adam Sandler

For Something with Adam Sandler & Heart: Uncut Gems

It’s unusual to see Adam Sandler in a role like this but in Uncut Gems, he plays Howard. Howard is a jeweler who likes to pay off one debt with another. Gambling addiction has caused his once reputable business to begin to crumble around him. Released in August 2019 Uncut Gems is a highly prized Netflix Original title that dropped in January 2020.

The best part of this movie is Adam Sandler. He is very convincing as a hot mess who likes living on the edge. The story does a great job of describing a not-so-gentle manic decline of one person waiting for his big break. Many people who threw shade on Uncut Gems complained about the incessant shouting, high-strung score, and fever-inducing dialogue.

If that doesn’t deter you, Uncut Gems might leave you feeling a little unfinished. I didn’t think so but it does end quite suddenly. If this sounds like something you would hate, The Irishman is another crime thriller in the top ten Netflix movies.

Human Nature Documentary Trailer on Netflix

HUMAN NATURE | Official HD Trailer (2019) | DOCUMENTARY | Film Threat Trailers

For Something Documentary: Human Nature

The top two rated feature-length (rather than series) documentaries are Human Nature and Miss America.

Human Nature is about as poignant as anything you could possibly see with the present nature of the world and its changes. If you watch the news or keep up with current events, Human Nature doesn’t really present any new information. However, like many documentaries, how the story is played out will make you think about a lot of concepts and vulnerabilities in the world of science.

CRISPR, if you are not familiar is a group of related DNA found in bacteria and single-celled organisms. Suddenly, man has the ability and tools to begin the manipulation of DNA using all the things we have learned in past decades. Human Nature wants you to consider how much we can do now in comparison with what those things might do to the environment, and ourselves. Some of these things are good, but of course, some are highly dubious.

The highlights of Human Nature are its ability to be relevant to everything we are going through as a society in 2020. At its weakest, it never really divulges all that much. What it does do well is combines everything we’ve ever imagined doing and shows us most of it has already been done. So what next?

And if this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, let me say that Miss America, is a fantastic documentary about Taylor Swift. Even if you don’t like her particular brand of music, her story is told in a fascinating way and gets right into her process as a musician and dealing with fame.

Asher Angel in Shazam! (2019)
Asher Angel in Shazam! (2019) Netflix Recommended movies from Mother of Movies

For Something Light and Funny: Shazam!

Shazam! looks like a kid’s movie but it has plenty of more somber moments. I saw this movie at the cinema because it reminded me of the Tom Hanks movie ‘Big’ except instead of changing from a kid to an adult it changes a kid into an adult superhero. Released in April 2019 and directed by David F. Sandberg, the story follows Billy Batson as he hits yet another foster home. His goal is to locate his mother.

Like many movies which maintain similar stories about young people ‘coming into their powers’ Shazam! has a great backstory, lots of sentimental moments, and plenty of laughs. This is not a movie that breaks any discernable ground but it’s cute and it’s well performed if you are looking for a narrative to seal the escapism deal. A sequel has been announced which will be made with the same filmmakers. We should more about it closer to November 2022 when it is scheduled for completion.

If you’ve already seen this and want a full list of superhero Easter eggs scattered throughout the film, check out the Mother of Movies Shazam! full movie review. There are some really nifty cinema references hidden in the 2-hour-twelve-minute runtime.

Alternatively, if you hate superheroes and love Lego, the next highest-rated Netflix movie in the comedy section is The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. Have at it. Mother of Movies recommends The Wrong Missy to watch next on Netflix. It’s the type of comedy that is so banal and ridiculous and can’t help but snort-laugh.

El Hoyo aka The Platform
The Platform is on Netflix Au and USA.

For Something in World Cinema: The Platform

The movie rated best on Netflix as far as foreign films go is I’m No Longer Here. However, the movie was rated by just a fraction compared with how many have said The Platform is worth your time.

The Platform was a highly anticipated film and dropped on Netflix at a time that couldn’t have serves the premise of the film more. The world was spinning in a tizz about toilet paper and buying as many non-perishable goods as humanly possible. Meanwhile, The Platform tried to symbolize the socio-economic system and the greed that surrounds it. For those looking for an explanation on The Platform, I found this really specific review from TheKing87 that helps make sense of a lot.

Basically, The Platform tells the story of Goreng who is imprisoned in a vertical self-management system prison. This concrete tower is built with 333 levels and Goreng awakes in cell 48. Each cell comprises two people, and his cellmate tells him that a platform stops on each level for a certain amount of time. Hoarding food results in death and each month a new floor is assigned. It’s a Spanish language film that is compared often to The Cube movies and originally premiered at TIFF in 2019 before hitting the Netflix catalog in March 2020. Those that didn’t enjoy this one cite the story’s ending as the reason for their disappointment.

It 2 Trailer – The Movie is on Netflix

IT CHAPTER TWO - Official Teaser Trailer [HD]
It Chapter Two streaming everywhere.

For Something in the Horror Section: It Chapter II

Personally, I disliked ‘It Chapter II.’ I could’ve survived with just scenes of James McAvoy, Bill Hader, Emily Chastain, and Bill Skarsgård eating ice cream instead. Therefore, Chapter Two is Netflix recommended but not Mother of Movies recommended. I enjoyed the first film, had my pants scared off by reading the novel, and simply may have gone into It Chapter Two with my hopes too high. Nonetheless, this is the highest-rated new release that Netflix recommends. With a satisfaction level of between 6.5/10 and 7.5/10 the Losers Club is back and this time they are all grown up.

The runtime is exceedingly long and has 169 minutes (nearly 3 hours!) to scare the daylights out of you but astonishingly fails. Unless of course you are naturally frightened of clowns, there is little more to offer in the sequel to It than the previous film. The Losers Club itself is particularly thin with much less camaraderie than the original film because they are separated for much of the movie. There was also far too much reliance on CGI and comedy. Normally I don’t mind carefully thought-out gags and special effects in big-budget films like this. However, I did think there was an issue with consistency for both here.

But, the majority of fans loved the sequel for the Steven King cameo, the changed finale compared with the book, and felt there was plenty to offer in character arcs.

Alternatively, I Am Mother has been well received as an offering of horror and science fiction fare along with Girl on the Third Floor and Annabelle Comes Home. 3 From Hell is also in the top five rated horror films on Netflix, however, I saw that at the cinema and refuse to recommend watching it on Netflix.
