Raging Fire Movie, The Last Film By Benny Chan

Donnie Yen himself lured Mother of Movies into the hype surrounding Benny Chan Muk-sings’ final film Raging Fire. In a short promotional video on Instagram, he talks about this film as, “the one to watch” since his iconic martial arts Ip Man movie series. Ip Man is one of the best action movie characters ever. Raging Fire will appease any martial arts action movie fan.

It has all the appropriate car chases, gunfights, and seamlessly choreographed combat scenes. Armies of bad guys vs small groups of good guys, fire and smashing glass. There are also bombs, beatings, and plenty of violence for those who love their thriller movies as gritty as they can be. While all this is happening the story is immersed in the time-classic setting of a good cop gone bad seeking revenge against those who did him wrong.

Donnie Yen

Donnie Yen plays Inspector Bong who is unswayable in his virtue. Five fallen law enforcers, responsible for the brutal murder of a criminal launch reprisal after their four years in prison. Once rising stars of the police force, they each have a score to settle against those who put them away. Responsibility for the tortuous techniques was left squarely with the officers once they got to court. They are bitter, and an action movie doesn’t need more convincing detail to wage a war.

Nicholas Tse

The villains house the more influential character depth. Nicholas Tse plays Ngo, the perfect grinning bad guy. Guilty of following orders of the worst kind, Raging Fire touches briefly on police brutality and uncouth behavior amongst official channels. The film often drags its heels in the dramatics of explaining itself.

At times where we often ask ourselves how can we possibly break the cycle of wrongdoing in upper ranks. A film like Raging Fire shows us that the little guy can come out on top by doing things right. Donnie Yen is the perfect vehicle for this type of sentimentality. With his trademark cool, calm, and collected demeanor alongside that pupil-dilating cheeky grin, fans know and love, Yen is a capable asset. Here he is both the boring catalyst that pushes the story along to later emerging in an epic tirade of baddie-crushing epicness in the second half.

Is Raging Fire a Good Action Movie?

The Raging Fire movie is entertaining. It’s not overtly intelligent in ways where you need to analyze the who’s, what’s, why’s, or when’s. Everything will be explained either by flashback or a heady speech to highlight the importance of events. The fact that Benny Chan died during post-production probably affected what was and wasn’t included in the final cut. Overall, Raging Fire is often cliche. It’s not something that will be known for ingenuity or groundbreaking relatability. But it does have everything you could want in an action film. If there is at least one moment where you find yourself clapping your hands at the sheer brilliance of the cinematography and sequencing, you know it’s worth watching.
