Streaming on Shudder. Nightmare Radio poster 2019

A Night of Horror: Nightmare Radio began at Cannes 2019 with the Blood Window selection. The best of the best horror short films are selected with Nightmare Radio marking the North American premiere. Horror Radio highlights anthology-style films and comes curated from two Argentinian filmmakers Nicolas and Luciano Onetti. Part of their role as directors gave them a license to create a wrap-around story to encase these excellent spine-chilling shorts movies. This is a good horror movie, and it’s just one of many good horror movies on Shudder.

The outside shell utilized to showcase these short films starts with Rod and we meet him and his silky radio voice as he sits in a darkened booth. The color palette used throughout the announcer’s radio set is a thing of beauty. Dark reds and shades of pink allow you to listen to each of the callers as they ring in with stories of their own. In one example a woman calls in to talk about an urban legend involving drying her hair with a microwave and another caller, a small child, calls in and amps up the dark nature of telling horror stories on the radio.

Rod, with his smooth radio voice, resides in a dimly lit booth, serving as the initial gateway to these short films. The announcer’s radio set captivates with its exquisite color scheme, featuring deep reds and various shades of pink. This aesthetic enhances the experience of listening to each caller as they dial in to share their personal tales. For instance, one woman recounts an urban legend about drying her hair with a microwave, while a young child dials in to amplify the eerie atmosphere by sharing chilling horror stories on the airwaves.

Best of the Best Directors Churn out the Best Horror Short Films

If you’ve just checked out the trailer for Horror Radio I can tell you the director’s chair is shared with Sergio Morcillo, A.J. Briones, Joshua Long, Jason Bognacki, Oliver Park, Matthew Richards, Adam O´Brien, Pablo S. Pastor. Each brings its horror-worthy tale to the table and all the short films are worth watching.

The anthology film’s opening act is the stunning play on a twist on the Invisible Man with; In the Dark Woods. A fable that incorporates many a scary tale and manages to thrill you with its visionary excellence. You will be hooked and want more after this opening short. The Smiling Man from YouTube’s Alter horror channel makes an appearance later on and is easily among the best of the best short films around with regards to great horror short films.

Every scary story plays into the backdrop tale that unfolds as Rod realizes something is amiss in his dimly lit studio.

If you want gore, you’ll find it, A little Off the Top promises all that and more. Spooky stories that will cause you to hesitate to turn out the light? “Vicius” has some hair-raising scenes that had me pondering whether to simply sleep with the lights on.
