Red Letter Day and Ghost in the Graveyard are both independent horror movies. Here’s a write-up and info for both films. Watch the movie trailers and come back and let Mother of Movies know what you think. Red Letter Day has all the makings of a lot of politically motivated horror films I like. The Purge definitely sprang to mind, as did a similarly micro-budgeted film, Boo! Billed as a survival thriller, this has more blood, gore, and one gag-inducing scene than I anticipated.

The movie doesn’t let you settle in before it gives you a taste of what’s to come. Case in point, a guy who treads on broken glass pulls some hefty chunks from the soles of his feet and then gets shot with a 12-gauge in the first minute or two.

Ghost in the Graveyard

The new horror 2019, Ghost in the Graveyard, begins, of course, in an actual graveyard. Some young whippersnappers are out and about in the middle of the night playing a good game of chasies. Of course, one thing leads to another, and as the saying goes, it’s all fun and games until someone falls into an open grave.

What begins as looking like a run-of-the-mill revenge haunting takes a turn about halfway through. All the pieces to the narrative never quite fit together, though, and nothing flows as a whole unit. There are glimmers of good intentions here and there, but ultimately, the end didn’t really justify the road to get there.

Sharp Nails And A Ghost

The driver of the story is Sally Sullivan (Kelly Berglund), who, from time to time, discovers clues about her past that don’t add up. There’s a whole mean girl slash live triangle scenario going on between its two main players, all relating back to the accident in the graveyard. Zoe (Olivia Larsen) tries her best to facilitate her mother’s evil plan, but is somehow thwarted by needing to lick Sally’s blood.

I had a lot of trouble digesting the film, given that the most robust casting only covered about three people. Some lines are so cheesy that Jake Busey had to have one too many close-ups to even say them.

I wanted to be surprised by the swing in tone this story creates, but there is just way too much going on without much depth to anything. Plus trying to hear several people attempt to say the word Bezelbub over and over made me even more uninvested in the end result.

As a directorial debut, I feel this was visually clean in its execution but messy in its details. Those who enjoy horror mysteries with religious subtext will like this one, but for me, it didn’t quite get there.

The Red Letter Day Movie

Performance-wise, I have definitely seen a lot worse, and despite the subsequently inexperienced cast, there is a lot more to like than dislike about each of them. The family at the center of the tale is the Edwards, consisting of Tim, Madison, and Melanie, who have just moved into the neighborhood.

The story’s setup takes the idea of having a puppet master behind the scenes pulling the strings. A silent games master inviting people into its inner circle. The kill or be killed game is this time by a red envelope containing clear instructions about someone within 5 km they have been matched with. No kidnapping or brute force is required. People show up with one thing on their minds… murder.

What the film lacks in being overly gripping, it makes up for in a really interesting way of traveling along. I wondered why anyone would even participate in such a thing unless there was some kind of added stressors. However, what the writers have done is enable a widespread panic, combined with misunderstandings and an orchestrated opening to airing your biggest grudges. Don’t bring cookies for your newest neighbors, just an ax and the willingness to start an uncomfortable conversation about your differences.
