IFC Midnight is renowned for distributing exceptional films. However, it’s unfortunate to say that “Trespassers” (also known as “Home Is Where the Hell Is“) did not meet my expectations, despite my high tolerance for home invasion-themed horror movies.
This film fails to capture the elements I usually appreciate in tense atmospheres, such as well-developed characters. Instead, every single person on screen becomes utterly unlikable. Moreover, the narrative disappoints by conforming to the typical horror film tropes of this genre and leaving important details unexplained. The illogical decisions, actions, and consequences portrayed throughout the film made me wish for the demise of all the characters by the midway point.
As far as aesthetics and cinematic excellence are concerned, Trespassers is undeniably a beautifully executed movie. The attention to detail in the production is impeccable, leaving no room for any trespassing charges to be filed against its quality. From the captivating storyline to the seamless transitions, this film knows exactly how to keep its audience engaged.
The Gore
On the upside, one of the standout elements of Trespassers 2018 is the incredible special effects work. The visual spectacle is quite something when it comes to the level of violence and how the scenes are executed. For instance, there is a particular moment when a machete works its magic on someone’s head. Despite its gruesome nature, the scene is executed with such unexpected precision and finesse that it leaves a lasting impact.
Furthermore, the shifts in dynamics within the narrative despite the unlikable characters are well thought out. Each time the tale takes a turn, the attention of the audience is skillfully directed to the right elements. Whether it’s a suspenseful moment or a more subdues scene that provides a brief respite, the pacing of the film is well handled.
“Trespassers” Will Be Shot
The cast of Trespassers deserves immense praise for their performances. Their portrayals are not only great but also incredibly believable. The actors’ ability to connect with the material they have been given is evident in every scene. Throughout the movie, various scenes make the cast appear suspicious or as innocent as they should. This ambiguity adds an extra layer of intrigue and suspense. Furthermore, I was constantly questioning the true motives of the key players.
To shed more light on my disappointment in “Home is Where the Hell Is”, I have no issues with unexplained intruders crashing party pads, but I don’t. I like many of the films centered around the Manson killings and his crazed potluck murder crew. No rhyme no reason and a “we just like to be violent” type of attitude suits many a horror flick. The exploitative nature of this horror movie will show many that just like gore for gore’s sake a good time. Movie lovers who enjoy a quick fix of depravity and a subtext of a larger picture may also appreciate how much this film has to offer.
However, for me, I was in pain. I was annoyed by the simpleton idiocy of both the victims, the intruders, and some of the coincidental eye-stabbing. I mean I am someone who is quite clumsy and has been known to fall doing mundane things. Never have I ever had my eye impaled while doing said mundane things. Sure it was a surprise, but was it a good one?
Is Exploitative Violence O.K?
And that’s only one example of the things that grated against the desire to watch yet another home invasion film. Maybe it’s not you, or the film, maybe it’s me. Have I seen one too many movies where random perpetrators want to kill strangers for kicks and giggles? I don’t know, but this one left a salty taste in my mouth.
In summary, Trespassers is a film that excels in both aesthetics and cinematic excellence. It boasts stunning visuals, impressive special effects, and a talented cast who bring the story to life.
