To be fair, I only watched “The Room” to add another title to my list of movies called The Room. The film is by French director Christian Volckman (Renaissance) who hasn’t made a movie for 13 years. The Room’s plot is a theme that has been played out before and this particular title was released in 2019. It has a singular narrative thread running through it, similar to the story of the monkey’s paw.
Here a young couple moves into a house and while renovating discovers a secret room. It’s Matt who finds out that this particular room will materialize any request. When his wife Kate finds him in what was previously empty space, it is now filled with famous art, furniture, and other items he had asked for. Together they indulge in all the mysterious four-walls have to offer, By the time they’ve accumulated all they could ever need, they discuss getting things that are closer to their hearts.
The first thing I liked about this movie, is that it doesn’t mess around. It’s almost as though, Volckman knew audiences had seen this ‘monkey paw’ type agenda a million times, so why ease into it? There is no room to delve into why and how this mysterious secret room is able to do what it does either. A backstory is supplied concerning the previous tenants which opens up the space to have Matt search for remedies once the s*it hits the fan.
Be Careful What You Wish For
Instead, I was given more than I anticipated in this science fiction-laden mystery movie. The perfect couple is invisibly separated after a discussion about trying for another baby. Now they have everything in life they could possibly want, Matt thinks it would be the perfect time to get back on track. Fear compels Kate to ask for the room for a baby instead. All in all, it seems like there are no consequences to having all their wishes granted. The Room movie 2019 sets about playing off one against the other.
Of course the old adage of “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” springs to mind and in one small moment Matt discovers the catch. It’s from here the story takes on a psychological genre twist and doesn’t really expose itself as a horror movie until well into the finale. Even then, if you’re expecting blood spatter and over-the-top scares, you’ve come to the wrong place. It can be considered great dark cinema though and we like that.
Room 2019
Performances are great in “The Room 2019”, especially for a single-location film with only a few characters. With blends of Coherence, Elizabeth Harvest, and The Cube, this is a movie that will keep you guessing. A surprising hidden gem to watch as soon as possible.

What’s the story behind the Monkey’s Paw?
The original text is from W. W. Jacobs where three wishes are granted to the owner of the paw. Interfering with fate has a price and each wish is granted with consequences. The tale has been adapted countless times in movies and films. Its ability to explore what people think will happen vs what actually happens is what keeps the stories interesting.
