Poster for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

I didn’t watch Once Upon a Time in Hollywood because the length of the movie is 162 minutes. Plain and simple, that’s just far too long. I watched the movie because Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has Margot Robbie, Leonardo DiCaprio, and a more high-caliber cast than you can poke a stick at. Streaming on Amazon Prime (AU) and Amazon Stars (USA) I finally committed. Lucky for me, time flew by.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood makes many statements about the serial killer Charles Manson. Attempting to review a film like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood isn’t easy but I’ll show you the trailer and give you some information on the soundtrack and see if I can sway you as well.

The fact is, this movie makes a lot of statements. And therein lies the beauty of a film by Quentin Tarantino. You’ve got to admit, love him or not, his style and pervasive violence have a certain appeal. In this film especially, it’s like he bottled up what everyone wanted to see and sprayed it all on screen.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Cast

OMG, the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood cast. Under normal circumstances, sometimes, I’m put off by films starring Brad Pitt. Most of the time they are solid films, don’t get me wrong. But it’s almost like a too-cool-for-school reunion when Pitt is involved. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, however, has renewed my faith in just how great he is.

If you were missing Luke Perry, he’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood too. Overwhelmed by Margot Robbie’s effort in The Emancipation of Harley Quinn? Let her woo you back into her good graces as she more than appropriately encapsulates Sharon Tate. Not to mention Leonardo DiCaprio, who over almost three hours proved you can make friends with someone while watching a film.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Synopsis

The fact the film is more than a gob-full of stories wrapped in a tale about all sorts of things makes it hard to revise. On the face of it though, it’s simply about an actor called Rick. As he makes his way through the grind of fame, doubts his ability, and restores his own faith he is accompanied by his stunt double Cliff. Rick just happens to live next door to Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski.

Film Review For Once Upon A Time in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is narrated by Kurt Russell as we follow each of the central cast. A movie that is totally fiction but smack bang in the center of real people swept up onto the Hollywood hot track. Portrayals of some of the characters are based on actual traits and reported news which is why so many people can’t place a definitive finger on which parts are real and which aren’t.

Charles Manson makes an appearance as do his girls with statements and behaviors speckled with fact and exploding with fiction and flamethrowers. If you want to know more about reality vs fiction within the film I found this great article from Esquire. Honestly, this aspect of Tarantino’s storyline is one of the reasons this film is so great. Historically accurate fiction hidden under a cloak of “what if.”

Overall, the epicenter of the entire film is fun. As a viewer, there is a built-in ready-made tension because we know who Charles Manson is. Nothing on-screen alerts us to the accuracies within the story, but most of us felt the danger when Cliff Booth went to Spahn Ranch. The creation of a character like Booth (Pitt) and Dalton (DiCaprio)allowed for a reprieve without reliving the horror of the cults’ insertion into L.A.’s glamourous pavements.

Is The Hollywood Movie About Charles Manson?

I couldn’t help but be reminded of a previous film The Haunting of Sharon Tate, which I reviewed. Both these films take real events related to the murder of Sharon Tate and twist them into an alternate universe. What could have happened if things had all been different? Of course, here in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the finale of the Charles Manson story is my favorite outcome yet.

It excludes the murder in totality which is a refreshing and welcomed plot twist. If you haven’t seen the movie, I won’t spoil it. It’s a special Tarantino-flavored comeuppance that serves as a reminder that this is still a film that includes all his trademarks. Despite the long commute to the finish line, I’m now keen to see the additional scenes cut from the film.
