Alone Review 2020 Road Rage & Serial Killers

Jules Willcox in Alone (2020)

John Hyams and Mattias Olsson’s “Alone” is a remake of a Swedish title “Gone” aka “Försvunnen” that was released in 2011 and was directed by Olsson. Judging by the trailer for the original movie, this tense thriller film looks to be identical. In a classic setting somewhere between Spielberg’s Duel and the latest Russell Crow movie Unhinged, Alone brings a chilling misadventure tale to a road rage-inspired storyline.

The title involves the usual skeletal cast and begins with Jessica on the road. It doesn’t matter what her destination is. Information like this sometimes only provides more fodder to nudge a complaint. What we do know is Jessica is towing a U-Haul and driving as far as possible to begin afresh. Her dad calls her, followed by her mother. The darkly lit and tension-filled title dropped on the Netflix platform in the USA in March 2024. For more places to watch Alone 2020, Mother of Movies can tell you that too.

Unhinged People and Stalkers Usually Choose Their Victims

Other tense stories like Jeepers Creepers or even Joy Ride offer up the commitment to outrunning a random vehicle. Road Rage is often the catalyst for stories like this and it’s a great breeding ground for horror films. Generally, these stories involve some sort of unhinged person trying to out-chicken a random individual for fun. In this narrative, Jessica decides to participate with a trailer in tow. Did she need to overtake a Jeep Grand Cherokee on a mountain road? Maybe, maybe not. Luckily the random sociopath part of the story is still in play. In this case, Jessica nominated herself as someone to play with instead of him having to go out and find someone new.

It’s from here that this black Jeep begins to appear everywhere.

Where to Watch the Alone Movie

Movie Where Killer Stalks Someone Alone in the Wilderness

What I liked about the film was the stalker slash psychopathic serial killer probably thought at this point his luck had changed. He stops behind her at a rest stop and sparks up a conversation. Despite many instances later to the contrary, in what becomes more of a survival thriller, Jessica seems to have an intrinsic sense of wanting to stay alive. She is rightfully wary of this weird Ned Flanders man who taps on her car window. She leaves him stranded on the road when he appears to have broken down in her path. At one point she even calls the police and reports being followed.

But unlike the classics, the story further falls apart when beautiful cinematic aerial shots to highlight just how vast the forests are, are counteracted with the ability to hunt down a lone woman as easily as if she were dressed in a bright pink bunny costume. The kindness of strangers is wiped quickly away with one whisper from our villain about the craziness of a hysterical woman. The seemingly common sense-infused protagonist loses all credibility when the first person she calls is the stalker’s wife and not the police.

Trapped and Hunted Woman

In any case, Alone is a film about road rage, stalkers, and psychopathic serial killers is not a failure as a film. It just lacks a more high-brow dialogue to give it a better edge. If you are looking for something a little more vibrant in a survival film though, check out “Hunted” by Vincent Paronnaud.
