Sister of the Groom aka The Pleasure of Your Attendance 2020

The “Sister of the Groom” movie also known as, “The Pleasure of Your Attendance” was written for lovers of rom-com style stories who are sick of the boy meets girl template. What happens in the Sister of the Groom film is that instead of the consistent play-by-play many of us know and love to hate, this story throws the sickly sweet connotation of a happy ending out the door. Instead, it takes Audrey (Alicia Silverstone) and throws her into a family gathering of the hyperventilation-type and sees her attending her brother’s wedding. At the same time as the families come together, everyone is meeting for the first time.

For holiday cynics holding obligatory posts at celebrations like Christmas, Thanksgiving, and weddings, many know all too well the difference between what we imagine and what we get. Sister of the Groom captures the essence of this pie-in-the-sky reality well. Most of us imagine our family gatherings filled with games of charades around the fire. Instead, we are often met with a seedy uncle or two passed out on the couch. A sister-in-law crinkles her nose up at the mention of the highly regarded stuffing for all to see. There are tensions and false niceties for some of us.

Sister of the Groom Dresses, There Are Plenty of Options

The narrative takes anecdotes of familiar faux pas and gently smooshes them into your face. Instead of starting with the blissful romance part, it steadies the targets during dinner as the two families settle in together. We learn that Clemence and Liam’s new home is Audrey’s family home. It’s where she and her brother grew up with their parents. The tension is immediate and the fractures to avoid in the coming days are presented.

While many won’t relate to every character, there’s a surety that you will bond with many. Director and writer Amy Miller Gross maintains a thread of relatability within its central cast. Audrey represents a middle-aged mom, unhappy with her status as she yearns for what could have been. Her husband, Ethan (Tom Everett Scott) tries in vain to recapture the essence of a spark within his waning marriage. Of course, The Pleasure of Your Attendance movie wouldn’t be a romantic comedy without the addition of some cutesy generic tonal elements.

Wedding Invitations

Performances are as you would expect of a cast of well-seasoned faces. Silverstone is always a delight. Thankfully, Mathilde Oliver who plays Clemence pulls off a French accent, and, choosing a Parisian-born actress was an excellent casting choice. The chuckle-worthy dialogue is sparse, with Sister of the Groom film maintaining most of the runtime firmly in the drama genre. Audrey’s reflection and turmoil take a front seat as she replays her entire life through each segment of preparation for her brother’s marriage. As events unfold the presence of unpredictability creeps in giving the film a fresh feel thanks mostly to the exceptional script. It dips its toes into over-the-top dramatics but does so with a steady hand.

Mother of Movies viewed Sister of the Groom firmly from the perspective of Audrey. Overall, the movie makes an excellent addition to those with an addiction to sappy flicks. Is Sister of the Groom a good movie? Absolutely. Or for when you’ve had one too many brandies at Aunty Helen’s for Christmas. You could even watch it if you simply can’t stomach something like “Holidate” this year.
