Percy and Goliath movie review on Mother of Movies

A film is like a seed, it must start from a fertile place and be carefully looked after. The story must take root, and the passion to make it come to life has a deep reach. It does not take one person. It takes a team to watch over it, let it grow, and harvest it for the masses.

Without these steps of genuine passion, you may end up with something under or over-ripened, rotten, or just okay. It is in even the worst films that there was at least one step of completely honorable intentions taken. Luckily what we have in the film Percy vs. Goliath shows that at many points throughout the production, a deep passion for the material was clearly there.

While not every piece of fruit this crop produced was perfect, there is enough good here to recommend a story that has affected the lives of everyone around the world whether or not they realize it.

The Ripe Fruit in Percy Versus Goliath Movie

With any based on a true story drama film like Percy Versus Goliath, there will always be a need for solid acting that carries the material presented. Luckily with our main leads here, we get that, despite any preconceived reservations. Christopher Walken, Zach Braff, Christina Ricci, and Roberta Maxwell all bring a lot to the screen and their roles.

Personally, the Percy Versus Goliath movie took a little while to warm up to Walken (who plays farmer Percy Schmeiser). As someone who was a child of the 90s, you can’t help but take to the parody version of his character sometimes. However, he is really putting his all into the piece and it shows. There are no scene-chewing moments, which may actually be a deal-breaker for some.

Christina Ricci brings a much-needed spunk and charm to bring us into the second act of Percy Versus Goliath. Her upbeat attitude adds a lot of liveliness to every scene she is in. She believes strongly in the fight for Percy Schmeiser against Monsanto. Zach Braff steps comfortably into a more nuanced performance as Schmeiser’s lawyer and brings some solid intensity when he needs to. Roberta Maxwell plays the supporting wife to Walken in Percy Versus Goliath. She doesn’t get a lot to do outside of that role. She is still solid here.

Outside of just the acting, there is a great sense of production value throughout the film. The cinematography is gorgeous, and the number of locations and scenery used shows that the entire production is committed to perfectly showcasing this story.

The Sour Patches

Even with so much good, there will always be a bit of the bad. Going back to the thought of the 90s nostalgia, the Percy film feels like something from that era. A biopic where you can feel the beats coming before they hit and an ending that will not leave you guessing… maybe for the worst.

Some moments shown felt forced and the dialogue can come from films you’ve seen before. If you enjoy biopics then you will do no wrong by sitting down to this one. However, those coming into things hoping for some genre-defining film will find some disappointment.

It would be unfair though to call a film bad for following a formula because what the story is here to does so effectively and clearly which is a sign of solid intentions from the filmmakers involved.

Saving the Seeds

Percy Vs Goliath was an enjoyable if not predictable film with a great core cast who are all clearly involved with their characters. The portrayals all feel genuine, and there is a clear heart in the end product. This won’t be a film studied by scholars the world over, but there is a lot of well-done storytelling and filmmaking here that it is worth your time to sit down to.
