Take one retired assassin back for one final job and the brother of the man he just killed and what do you get? Deliver Us From Evil. A South Korean crime thriller that’s heavy on the artillery and slapped with the type of fight scene choreography you know and love. Director-writer Won-Chan Hong (The Chaser + The Yellow Sea) sets up in familiar territory following hitman Ray, fresh from killing a Japanese mobster called Koraeda.

Shortly after we are introduced to a mother and daughter going about their day-to-day routine. Young-Joo gets her daughter ready for school and drops her off. She tells her the babysitter will collect her in the afternoon. Young-Joo is about to buy a house and is set to meet some people to discuss. Yoo-min’s babysitter turns up at the school, but instead of delivering her home, she is seen driving away with an unknown man.

Who Kidnapped Ray’s Daughter Yoo-min In Deliver Us From Evil?

Frantic, Yoo-min’s mother reports her missing before receiving a phone call from the kidnappers. They insist she tells no one if she wants to find her daughter alive. That fateful call, see Young-Joo found dead. Yoo-min is missing.

There is a tonne of spinning pieces in the Deliver Us From Evil movie. This is certainly not the kind of action and crime movie you can look away from if you want to follow who is chasing who and why. The main pieces to pay attention to though, are that Ray was once Young-Joo’s lover, 8 years prior, and the group he worked for forced him to leave her behind in Korea. She had a child, Yoo-min. Ray was never told about the fact, this young girl is his. When he is informed of his ex-lover’s death, he decides to go and see her dead body. It’s then, that Ray is informed that the missing child is his daughter, and no one can tell him what happened to her.

Why would you want to get him so badly?

The Butcher: The reason doesn’t matter.

Deliver Us From Evil 2020

Meanwhile, as Ray prepares to investigate who might have kidnapped his daughter, the brother of the man he killed in Japan, The Butcher is hot on his heels and gearing up to take revenge. An epic showdown is on the horizon. Every action-filled scene fuels its momentum The Butcher is one of those villainous characters that are so good, that you wish the movie was more about them. Ray, is a man of few words and stoic. However, he’s still a likable anti-hero I was always happiest when the narrative steered back towards what The Butcher was up to.

Deliver Us From Evil pivots from three areas. Firstly you have Ray tracking down those responsible for killing his one and only love to an underground child trafficking ring that serves to sell organs for transplants. Secondly, The Butcher, who simply wants to kill Ray for killing his brother, and lastly, Yoo-min, who is fervently awaiting rescue from a father she never knew she had.

Deliver Us From Evil Korean Movie

As Ray gets closer and closer to finding Yoo-min, he is accompanied by a bilingual transgender woman called Yui. Yui brings a warm comedic essence to the story. With enough backstory to keep you invested, Yui’s ends up being the most important. Her motives to help Ray are what hinge the plausibility of the finale. Like many of Hong Won-Chan’s films, you can bet Deliver Us From Evil won’t end the way you expect it to. And that’s why we like him so much.

Overall, Deliver Us From Evil is highly entertaining. Much of the action is over the top. In addition, some parts will have you questioning whether a child can survive in a suitcase or where they bought the suitcase. It could be the toughest suitcase on the planet. Despite this, lovers of South Korean action and crime movies should be champing at the bit to see this. And for good reason too.

This isn’t my favorite South Korean action film, but it is worth watching.
