The Night Comes For Us, Starring Iko Uwais

The Night Comes for Us

The Night Comes For Us 2018 streams on the Netflix platform and to be honest I wasn’t prepared for the gorehound lovers’ delight that was thrust at me when I sat down to watch this. Could this film starring Iko Uwais be one of the best action movies ever? This is a spoiler review as it contains various plot references. I won’t be divulging how this one finishes up, but I will be discussing narrative and characters within the story.

Also, I’ve listed everything that kills someone — and; it’s a long list!

The Night Comes For Us 2018 Reviewed

From the moment the film begins there is graphic, war-like violence. Men with machine guns line up a group of villagers while the camera intermittently swaps over to a young girl sitting in the wet sand watching on. The opening scenes create a cliffhanger of sorts before the story leads into multifaceted situations across a few different groups of people.

The Night Comes to Us doesn’t overly explain much of the warfare within the narrative. If you aren’t paying attention to this one, it’s quite easy to get lost within the long stretches of out-and-out combat and killing. Some of the fights go on a little too long. Each fight involves scores of people, almost akin to watching a zombie flick where one or two people take on a massive horde.

What About the Fight Scenes With Iko Uwais?

Some of the hero-led fights are a smidge under-done with hordes of people hanging back only to be taken out one by one. A CGI tooth flying across the screen to add extra bedazzle. Strength in numbers passed over in lieu of one on one ensembles. Considering the magnitude of the scenes, they truly can be overlooked.

I must admit though, this is the first Asian action film where the violence outweighs and possibly undermines the story/narrative. For me that’s what hinders it from becoming one of the best action movies ever… but I guess it really does depend on what you want out of a film like this. For me, I would have preferred a little more downtime between the constant onslaughts. Be more invested in a few of the characters. I began to form a picture of what Ito’s motivation was but I’m not certain I had enough to go off.

Girl on Girl Action

I did watch a little of this with my phone over my eyes, especially in a few of the end scenes. Surprisingly it came in a fight between two women. An unusual sight to be sure but there is certainly no sexism in The Night Comes For Us movie. These women were as brutal if not more brutal than some of the men. To the point where I almost vomited in my mouth a little.

A fight later caused the same reaction, there’s something just not right about Stanley knives used in a fight. Luckily I was able to just add ‘Stanley knives’ to the list while looking down and not watch the rest of the face-stabbing competition they were having.

Is Iko Uwais Part of One of The Best Action Movies?

Yes, it’s pretty cool. Either way, this really is a must-see if your enthusiasm lies in over-the-top weaponry, fights, and a battle for good vs bad. Overall it’s a high-gore fighting person’s wet dream, but I’d of preferred a little more narrative. Just a smidge, thanks.
