“PLAYING GOD” in The God Committee Review

The God Committee courtesy of Vertical Entertainment

Kelsey Grammer and Julia Stiles are the central cast in The God Committee movie as heart surgeons. Writer-director Austin Stark’s film about ethics is a story that wants to sway you with arguments for and against who lives and who dies. The patients being considered are all at death’s door for one reason or another. Heart transplants and a myriad of other ailments are all up for discussion by a panel of doctors, and staff. More importantly, its hospital administrators are charged with voting for or against it. If you’ve never considered the fact that mere people are in charge of many facets involved in organ transplantation, the title will have you ponder the equation. Financial, personal and medical opinions are all on the table in deciding who is the most deserving. Playing God has never been more grey.

This film about playing god with people’s lives was once a stage play penned by Mark St. Germain and adapted for the silver screen. The main bulk of the scenario is that a young boy with a rich father needs a new heart. Pitted against other possible recipients, the father throws in a generous donation if his son is the successor for the next heart up for grabs. The film throws in plenty of other things to ponder, just in case the platform is too easy to navigate. The personal health choices of the potential candidates are bandied about as are their likelihoods of treating the heart well.

Could You Play God?

Julia Stiles and Kelsey Grammer take up the bulk of the screen time. Milked to its last drop, a soured romantic investment encapsulates just how different the two are when it comes to the nature of decisions like this. Stiles as Dr. Jordan Taylor weighs up things with a humanistic touch. While Dr. Andre Boxer considers everything in the most base on scientific ambiguity. “It’s just a muscle” he points out in one scene as if granting a terminally ill human being a new life is nothing more than black and white. It’s to this end, that many who watch “God Committee” will decide on which side they sit. Both have perfectly valid arguments.

The storyline plays around with timelines that show both before and after the fateful decision of who gets the donor’s heart. The drama film throws in some fancy genetic science being worked on by Dr. Boxer. He plays around with animal organs trying to find an alternate way to save everybody or perhaps to save himself one day. Additionally, they navigate around the committee’s debates being futile. Some of those charged with the final votes add further conspiracy fuel to the fire.

The God Committee

Austin Starks’ movie is 89-minutes of “what if?” that will appease those who love a tense medical drama. Additionally, solid casting and beautiful cinematography make everything feels dark, gloomy, and apathetic simply of the nature of the characters at play. Doctors, nurses, and hospital staff are all experts in hiding how much a situation they deal with daily affects them. In this instance, you get to see the cracks as well as consider what you might do in the same situation.
