Living Among Us movie is a comedy horror about a family of vampires. They have just made themselves public rather than hidden from society. Now a group of documentarians has been granted access to learn how they live and coexist with humans. But as reality sets in, the crew realizes their very lives are in danger. This quirky film is vampire-found footage.
Living Among Us Plot
Living Among Us is a comedy/horror. It featured some young journalists looking to prove to the world that vampires have evolved within society and are nothing to fear. It begins with a sometimes poorly acted news break showing that vampires have “come out” and they would like some footage produced that shows how they can now coexist alongside humans.
What I liked about this movie was its point of difference. I always had a penchant for vampires and I feel strongly about finding great found-footage films so putting these two things together is genius. Brian A. Metcalf is the writer and director, and he also had his hands all over some of the film’s effects. I loved that the violence was over the top blood spatter everywhere thrill of killing. Knowing the vampire family will at some time kill doesn’t prepare you for its graphics and public statement.
The score in this flick is worthy of its soundtrack and comes complete with Andrew Keegan as Blake who encompasses the frenetic blood-sucking fame whore you would expect to find in a film like this. His character was a lot of fun. He brings the sort of energy I was looking for when I watched this.
John Heard is cast as Andrew and ultimately the daddy of the vampire house and it is always a pleasure seeing his face in a feature film. This was his third last film as he passed unexpectedly in 2017.
Vampire Movies You Haven’t Seen
The cast for Living Among Us is chock full of faces most will recognize. Despite the early fogginess of some stilted performances from smaller bit-parts, the capable casting enables the movie to catch up to a higher level throughout. What I found stalled the film was some drag towards the middle. Additionally some inconsistent narrative in the finale involving Carrie (Jordan Hinson).
Without spoiling too much of the ending of Living Among Us, I can say I found the large written display at the beginning describing the documentarian’s death counterproductive to the tension. Without this information, for me, the film could have instead contained a few more surprises. I found myself waiting for their deaths and looking into scenarios a little more calculated than I would have normally done.
Overall Living Among Us is worth watching but some parts drag it down at times. I would have liked to see more development within a few characters to take it further. I’m sure that most will overlook the production faux pas that are noticeably evident at times and find appreciation in this solid low-budget Vampire flick. For a 2024 found footage film, watch Mind Body Spirit next.
