Netflix movies come and go but rarely do certain faces or directors set my excitement level to maximum. February 1st, 2019 saw the release of Velvet Buzzsaw. Also, as well as a thorough review, I’ll explain what a Velvet Buzzsaw is in a sealed section. You might be surprised and possibly offended by what the term means.
Possessed Art A Supernatural Horror
If you’re a fan of supernatural horror, this absurd horror film is a must-watch. Unlike many other films in this genre that focus on demons and religious themes, this movie takes a unique approach by delving into the world of art and possession.
The storyline revolves around the eerie and unsettling concept of art pieces being possessed. As the characters navigate this paranormal phenomenon, viewers are drawn into a world where the line between creativity and malevolence is blurred. This fresh take on supernatural horror is sure to disturb those seeking a new and unconventional thrill.
For those drawn to the darker side of artistic expression, “Velvet Buzzsaw” offers a chilling exploration of the potential horrors that may lurk within the beauty of creativity. Whether you’re a seasoned fan of supernatural horror or simply intrigued by the concept of art coming to life in the most sinister of ways, this film promises to deliver a gripping and unforgettable experience. So, if you’re ready to delve into a world where the macabre meets the artistic, this is your ticket to a spine-tingling journey through the darker dimensions of creativity.
Velvet Buzzsaw has a cast to die for (literally) Velvet Buzzsaw stars:

What Happens in Velvet Buzzsaw?
Paintings are discovered in the Velvet Buzzsaw movie. Each was painted by an unknown artist who was turning these stunning works of art into rubbish. The film describes the art world as being as cannibalistic as the cinema world. Art dealers rule the roost and are portrayed as greedy, critics always looking for their next payday.
The series of art is mixed into an art show in a very prestigious gallery. But it’s here that the supernatural force contained within them is allowed its revenge. The greedy are knocked over one by one in violent and vicious ways.
If you’re a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, you will not be disappointed in his portrayal of Morf Vanderwalt, an art critic, swanning around at different L.A Galleries waving a judgy eye over all the art he spies. Velvet Buzzsaw gets that bit right.
Unfortunately, everyone involved in the upper end of the art world winds up dead after looking at the newest sensational art pieces.
It’s Not Like Nightcrawler But it Does Feature the Lower Forms of Society
The film’s director Gilroy (Nightcrawler) found inspiration through the idea that artists put their souls into their work and combining this sentiment with a horror film is truly inspiring. Consequently, this idea was squandered somewhat, however similarly to art appreciation, it’s in the flaws that this narrative is both good and not so good.
The aesthetics of the film are amazingly beautiful, just as you would expect. But there are times when you will simply be bored out of your skull. Just like a good painting though, the more you watch the better it gets. The more you notice, the less you see the flaws and by the end, you’re somewhat disappointed but talking about it is still interesting. There is also a lot of added filler that didn’t need to be there. Meanwhile, just because the messages are a little wonky at times, doesn’t mean you can’t straighten up the picture in your own mind.
In any case, Netflix movies can be very disappointing if you watch too many back-to-backs. If anything this story is a unique and interesting one. More importantly, the meaning behind the title was the most interesting thing I looked up while watching it. Find out what it means below.
What Is A Velvet Buzzsaw?
What Does Velvet Buzzsaw Mean?
- In layman’s and not the technical version, a velvet buzzsaw is a sexual reference. You’ll be surprised to learn giving one should not cause the person giving it a spinal injury. Why’s that? Because the person giving one needs to shake their head as violently as possible. They should at the same time have their tongue out. Yep, you guessed it, it’s some sort of next-level cunnilingus.
- And in non-technical terms? Haha, there isn’t one. That’s what it means.
I give Velvet Buzzsaw
3.5 velvet buzzsaws from a rock star out of 5
