Skinwalker: The Howl of the Rougarou | Documentaries To Freak You Out
Small Town Monsters by Seth Breedlove. The latest installment of all things legend and beast. Skinwalker: The Howl of the Rougarou review.
Small Town Monsters Skinwalker: Howl of the Rougarou is a Breedlove’s scary story experience. If you’ve never heard of Seth Breedlove, or the series Small Town Monsters but love a tall tale focused on folklore, mythical monsters, and history around the USA, then this might just be your new favorite documentary series. This selection of interviews, recreations, and anecdotal evidence is all about the Werewolf and Shapeshifters. The same, Rougarou has a long history in the American South. Said to live in the swamps and bayous, the documentary splits into various lines of investigation. These lines aim to uncover the truth behind 400 years of legend.
If you love monster movies and creature features, watch Death Valley, Consumed or The Tank next.
“Small Town Monsters” deep dives into communities with tales ingrained into local heritage. The series has covered the Mothman, UFO, Bigfoot, and a handful of other creatures said to stalk the Earth. Unseen by many but known by enough people, these stories are told to children. This ensures they come home before dark. Sometimes they are told to visit strangers to warn them or scare them. The Rougarou is said to be a descendant of a cannibalistic tribe who slipped over into the dark side.
Breedlove interviewed witnesses and local experts to create a map of just where and who these creatures are. The Rougarou also goes by the name of the Cajun Werewolf, and by all accounts, this monster could be the background story of any one of dozens of werewolf movies. American Werewolf in London, Wer, and Wolves all utilize this horror film favorite as their star beast. Even more recently, Bloodthirsty also had one of the best werewolf transformations in recent years.

Reenactments are well composed in ‘Skinwalker: Howl of the Rougarou.’ They use blurry far-off images, found footage, and recreations of things people have reported seeing. Locals who have encountered a Cajun Werewolf tell their stories, and some of the on-screen visuals have a great, creepy campfire tale vibe. Many interviews seem to veer away from the original werewolf core. But there’s no doubt that if you only knew the basics about what you think a werewolf is, then this documentary will fill in the rest of the gaps.

My favorite part of this investigative foray into all things Skinwalker was the story about the hitchhikers. According to legend, one long stretch of highway is renowned for sightings of these creatures. They want to eat your soul, and if you are silly enough to give one a ride, then you could even lose more than that. Interviews from a few people who have seen these scary-looking travelers on the road were convincing. More than that, a reminder not to wear white if you ever need a lift at night in Louisiana.
