Adam Randall directed I See You, a solid thriller that was released in 2019. A film Mother of Movies particularly liked. Needless to say, I was looking forward to Night Teeth which arrived on Netflix as part of the Halloween lineup for 2021. The cast of Night Teeth was filled with faces I liked too, Jorge Lendeborg Jr. plays the introverted yet shy Bennie.
The proverbial innocent placard in a universe filled with a war between Vampires and humans. Debbie Ryan and Lucy Fry played the naughty but sometimes nice bad girls Blaire and Zoe. Under the watchful eye of their King, Victor (Alfie Allen) set about taking down all the leaders in an attempt to overthrow a power insufficiency.
Adopting a color palette and tonal comic facade which seems to be trending in cinema in 2021, Night Teeth attempts to modernize the Vampire kingdom. Unfortunately, despite being pretty, enthusiastic, and emanating as much “cool” as it could muster, Night Teeth was beige in every other way. The story is poised toward the teenage demographic and even then lacks any type of substance that would create the depth needed for a film of this type.
Does He Give Good Blood?
Victor seemed to be the only cast member of Night Teeth to enunciate any type of proper menacing presence. But he simply wasn’t given enough of the neon limelight to provide the carnage that was sorely lacking. Most of the violence is provided by far-off shots of blood-spattered windows or centered toward the aftermath. Depending on your view of or tolerance of gore and bloodshed, this might be a good thing. For me, it made the lackluster events even more subdued.
There was nothing askew within performances rolled out in Night Teeth, however, aside from Bennie’s Grandmother, I couldn’t have cared less if most of the key players were eliminated. A bit-part for Megan Fox (Grace) early in the part alongside Sydney Sweeney (Eva) was criminally underused. Especially given their roles were more interesting than most of the other characters.
On the upside, Night Teeth isn’t awful. It was fun at times and included all the stereotypical vampire anecdotes you expect in a movie about vampires. There is a little bit of romance and, some cool vampire incineration. Also, there is some vaguely interesting unexplained weaponry. The narrative also gives enough to warrant a one-time watch even if the runtime outstays its welcome.
The story was written by Brent Dillon and marks his debut in a feature film release.
