Available to watch in the USA, Shattered is a thriller movie that takes off with an extremely bumpy start. Set up to the hilt with coincidental happenstance, a beautiful ex-model runs into a tech tycoon at the shops. One thing leads to another and they neck a few bottles of wine then hit the sheets. Before you know it a would-be thief brandishing a crowbar just happens to be mid-attempt in stealing Chris’s very fancy car. Injured and with a very broken leg Chris hands the keys to the kingdom over to his new lover. Sky just wants to help him in his time of need.
Chris’s fortune was made by his own design. He created a security system that led to a deal with Google. As someone keen on making things safe, Chris seems like the opposite of someone who has a specialized interest in locks, bolts, and passcodes. But if handing over all your life’s work sounds like it happens very fast, it’s because it does. Sky stays with him, moving her junk into his mansion within 26 minutes of the film’s opening. In a lot of pain, Chris even agrees to let the lovely Sky (Lilly Krug) be his nurse. This means she is also the administrator of his medication. Silly Chris.
The only mystery here is whether Chris’s penis wise decisions lead him into happily ever after or being ripped off so royally that no one feels sorry for him because he’s stupid. I’m going to go with the latter, but mid-movie, I do hedge bets on him marrying her to wedge himself further into an “I can’t believe my luck” hole.
This is Crazy But I Think I Love You
So what’s wrong with Sky? Numerous examples of dialogue point to something shady along the journey. Fortunately for audiences, future dialogue doesn’t leave any grey areas and Sky unloads all of her crazy while eating a bucket of chicken. After that, “Shattered” just becomes about who won’t steal from Chris. Apparently no one. Everyone wants a piece of Chris’s fortune.
Despite the stodgy narrative, Shattered is beautifully aesthetic. Set mostly in scenic landscapes and within the walls of a multi-million dollar estate. Performances are believable even up against the fact most of the story is extremely unrealistic. The film tries to admonish the sentiment that a life not being used is worth stealing. Lesson learned. Our would-be thief Sky never holds back on the insanity nor the violence, doing so with a gorgeous smile on her gorgeous face. I have to admit, a stunning woman born of deceit would probably rob me of my mansion too if I had one. Thank goodness I don’t.
Shattered progresses into a very watchable trash TV format that’s easy to invest in. Eventually hitting its peak when the scope of the con job becomes less dumb meets dumber and infiltrates a more sophisticated line of operation. Both frustrating and enthralling, Shattered isn’t a complete waste of time. It’s a thriller movie that weathers all the familiarity of every other film like it but still, that’s not always a bad thing.
