Morbius Poster

Vampires morph into human form, have spectacular sonic hearing powers, and have the ability to drain the blood of anything nearby. The Morbius film should have been a home run for any Marvel superhero fan. But alas, not even the muscled and ripped body of its inhabited character, Jared Leto could summon interest. This platonically violent story failed to engage. In the lead-up to the Morbuis release, there were several enticing trailers to whet the appetite during the numerous delays to scheduling. However, the story that I had been patiently waiting for is so paper-thin, that the comic book may be better.

Morbius is an origin story and I understand the ethos behind it. Good versus evil and morality over the ability to survive should count for a semi-decent narrative. A doctor with a rare blood disease, the exemplary “good guy” wants to help his best friend Milo (Matt Smith.) He has stopped at nothing to find a cure. All good superhero fodder for the casual cinephile. And when the good Dr. realizes that swigging bat blood and swirling it with his DNA is the answer to all his problems he’s suddenly filled with so much doubt he then refuses any part of his miraculous cure.

However, the Morbius film is not exciting. The CGI is weird at best. I found myself thinking about the decision behind having a trail of black speed lines follow Morbius whenever he flew or did anything cool. Fortunately, he doesn’t get to do very much that pushes the bar as far as action scenes go. There is no tonal bucket for which to place the entirety of the movie because there simply isn’t much to take from Morbius. The horror elements are severely lacking. The action sequences are nothing I haven’t seen before. The characters are more ensanguined than the body count we only hear about in conversation.

Overall, I was left completely baffled as to why I was so bored. I was slightly interested in filmmakers making it up to me next time.

Morbius Rating

Review aggregate websites have rated the Morbius film quite conservatively. IMBd.com has the film sitting at a 5/10. Critics of Rotten Tomatoes cite the film as a failure with about 16% satisfaction. Of course, audiences on the same site who have now seen the horror movie thought Morbius deserved a much higher satisfaction rating of 71%. But you be the judge, what did you think of the new vampire movie with Jared Leto? For another movie with vampires, watch Dead and Beautiful or The Shed next.

Morbius End Credit Scene

The ending of Morbius shows the lackluster love interest Martine just happened to get some of that tainted bat-blood herself. This opens up any future films for more Vampire goodness with a love interest to boot. Aside from that, I’m not getting into the messed up cross-referencing of having Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes (The Vulture) mentioned and tying it into the Spiderverse because it’s all too complicated for me. But if you want it all explained this video from Screen Rant should do you a service.
