Ambulance 2022 movie poster

An excellent tense and vibrant thriller, Ambulance has an all-star cast including Jake Gyllenhaal, Eiza González, and, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Together they play an unlikely trio stuck together inside the moving medical vehicle during a car chase. Pitching good guys paramedic Cam and police officer Zach as hostages against bank robbers the entire film is set against a speedy getaway as the thieves try to take their payday and escape into the sunset.

The Ambulance film is a remake of a Danish title of the same name made in 2005 and is more about the character dynamics between the key cast. Successful in this endeavor, relationships are intertwined and emotive where it counts. Cam begins her journey as a hard-set unemotional paramedic who wants nothing to do with the empathy side of her job. Police officer Zach is looking for love when he accidentally stumbles into the middle of the brazen bank heist to give the bank teller he likes his phone number. By the time the ambulance has absconded, the casualties are high among the thieves’ crew. In addition, new recruit Officer Zach gets shot instead of finding love. The ambulance picks him up but he is inside the vehicle as brothers Danny and Will use it to escape the clutches of plenty of awaiting squad cars.

Is Ambulance a Good Movie?

Despite the Ambulance movie supposedly being driven by innate interpersonal drama, there is no denying Bay’s effect on the overall result. The expectation of choreographed car chases, explosions, and drone shots across the city is all there too. And it’s impressive.

The differences between the original “Ambulancen” and this new version of the crime story are minor. In the Danish film, Will is still a veteran, but this time his mother isn’t dying. Instead, it’s his wife, Amy, who is constantly shown holding their infant son and wanting a life where she can be proud of her husband. In the hijacked ambulance, there is Officer Zach instead of a hapless patient who needs heart surgery. These details up the ante a little bit but keep consistency where required. Emotions are still high in every scene and there is nothing boring about the movie as it speeds along.

It’s easy to feel sorry for Will’s plight and the urgency required to obtain large sums of cash to save Amy. It’s also simple to follow Cam’s elicit foray into having a heart by saving a patient, rooting for the bad guy, and understanding that every story has two sides.

“Ambulance” is a fast-paced action-centric ride with reasonably astute comedic bursts. Aside from the proper bad guys (the ones with no morals compared to the ones with a few), everyone is likable. And that just makes it harder to swallow when a few of the most enjoyable characters end up dead.

Director Michael Bay

Director Michael Bay won somewhat of a filmmaking lottery during the production. Bay scored helicopters and enlisted patrol officers as extras to save money on what is essentially a low-budget action movie. In comparison, Ambulance had a budget of only $40, 000, 000 compared to some of Bay’s bigger films like 6 Underground ($150, 000, 000) and Transformers ($217, 000, 000.) In short, though, the budget deficit is almost unnoticeable.
