As the story unfolds, the unsettling secrets of the Skylight group gradually come to light through intense conversations between the protagonists. While early ratings on IMBd.com may suggest a negative reception, it’s important to note that the film’s writers and directors, Chris Cullari and Jennifer Raite, have a track record of success. Their previous projects such as “12 Deadly Days” and “Run For Your Life,” have garnered excellent reviews.

“The Aviary” delves into themes of resilience, friendship, and the enduring power of the human spirit. With its interesting storyline and compelling performances, this thriller movie offers audiences a thought-provoking cinematic experience.

Films About Cults – The Aviary

What “The Aviary” does well is mostly encased in its excellent cast. Malin Akerman is cast as Jillian (Scream Queens) alongside Lorenza Izzo as Blair (Knock Knock.) Both are convincing in roles that constantly compete against hallucinations and mistrust. With leads like this, it also means that even after days of scratching around in the sand, falling off cliffs, and peeing in the dirt, neither of them manages to look that terrible.

Throw in Chris Messina (The Sinner) as the mysterious and handsome cult leader Seth and it’s simply a shame no one is having a good time. Seth appears in timely mirage-like drop-ins, but he is neither menacing nor scary. Instead, we learn that Seth is heavily into suggestive hypnosis and we are left to decide whether what the two girls are going through is all in their minds or not.

In this cult, members face strict penalties such as deprivation of snacks and enduring exposure to the cold. One particularly concerning aspect involves Seth engaging in multiple sexual encounters with his followers. Furthermore, Starlight’s devotees actively participate in numerous “therapy” sessions, all of which are meticulously recorded by Seth. Additionally, insights reveal a detailed recruitment process that facilitated Blair’s acceptance into the ranks.

As the adventurous journey unfolds, the women find themselves navigating through the vast desert, facing unexpected challenges along the way. Despite getting occasionally disoriented, they manage their limited supplies of protein bars, an apple, and water, ensuring their sustenance through rationing. However, a newfound realization takes hold: one of the women maintains a remarkable connection with Seth, leading them to believe that Seth’s influence still prevails, reigniting their determination to persevere against all odds.

Is “The Aviary” a Good Movie?

The Aviary movie is predictable at times, but its overall impact is far from ordinary. The twist at the end delivers a powerful message that stays with you long after the credits roll. The film weaves metaphors about cages and the search for purpose, shedding light on the dangers of falling into the hands of manipulative individuals like Seth. With its low-budget charm and captivating storyline, The Aviary is a must-watch thriller that will leave you satisfied.
