Senior Year 2022

Sometimes you need a lighthearted popcorn flick with decent humor to turn that frown upside down. Senior Year movie is a cheesy, predictable modern version of films like Bring It On mashed into something along the lines of Billy Madison and Never Been Kissed. Rebel Wilson is cast as Stephanie who dreams of a perfect life after her mother dies of cancer. A titular regurgitated tale about being brought down by the mean girls during an epic season of getting things right. Stephanie goes from dork to delicious. She bags the local stud, Blaine, becomes cheer captain of the Cheer squad and has more “friends” than she could ever have dreamed of.

What Is the Movie Senior Year About?

Instead of making the film about an adult going back to school undercover or under the pretense of inheriting a fortune by completing year levels, Senior Year puts Stephanie into a Coma. During a cheer routine, her arch-enemy Tiffany orchestrated the fateful accident that caused her to fall and find herself in the hospital for twenty years. Sliding by on the purely comedic premise that a doctor’s note gives her permission to finish her final year at high school, Stephanie reenters the institution determined to become Prom Queen.

It’s highly unlikely you will come away from Senior Year thinking this is the best movie of 2022. However, there is plenty to like about the narrative, the sentiment, and the comedy full of warm fuzzies and cliched moments. Great performances highlight the often cringe-worthy behavior of some of the characters.

A highlight for me was Angourie Rice who plays a young Stephanie in the opening quarter. She nailed the accent and the way Rebel Wilson speaks. Wilson takes over the role of Stephanie when she wakes up as an almost 40-year-old woman. Jim Conway slides in as the easy-breezy father to the rambunctious teenager in an adult body. He adds a delightfully funny offbeat humor to the fact he now has his daughter back and she still acts like a 17-year-old. And let’s not forget Justin Hartley is great in any movie.

Senior Year Of High School

Alongside the routine themes of acceptance, popularity, and valuing your friends is some great rhetorical advice about social media. But none of the more serious socially thematic complexities outstay their welcome. Nor are they heavy-handed in the way they are raised. Senior Year is more of a simple comedy movie with some good giggles and a lovely heart. For another movie with laughs, watch “Mother Tongue” next.
