The High Note 2020

There are plenty of movies like The High Note. Do you know dozens of film titles where someone with a higher standing in life ends up finding their maid or assistant attractive enough to marry? Or in other storylines done to death, an assistant or friend ends up oozing so much talent they end up a star? Well, this romantic drama movie is more to the latter of cliched warm, and fuzzy-drenched genre movies.

A musical feel-good film that is just what you need when you require a mood lift. The High Note follows Maggie (Dakota Johnson) who loves her job as much as her job loves her. The personal assistant to an extremely successful singer Grace Davis (Tracee Ellis Ross.)

Despite the High Note movie being somewhat of a sunshine and sparkles type of film, there is a decent amount of implausible scenarios. Maggie has been in her role as Grace’s runner for many years. She knows the industry and the hierarchy of operations in and out. Her pivot from coffee-getter to opinionated wanna-be is not given the depth needed to make it fly. I found it extremely unlikely that utilizing a platform where higher-ups would appreciate Maggie forcing her talent down their throats in an “I’m better than you” forum would ever go down well. But that’s exactly what Maggie does.

Fortunately, the universe building in The High Note pushes a tonne of coincidence into the script. Maggie happens to hear a man in a record store who happens to be a singer who happens to need a producer singing while shopping for tunes. Jumping on an opportunity to prove herself, she ambushes him into thinking she can make him a star. With a fake it till you make it attitude, Maggie intends to make her dreams a reality by turning a nobody into someone famous.

The High Note Cast

Tracee Ellis Ross is the daughter of Diana Ross so it’s no surprise the woman has enough talent to steal the limelight in The High Note. Her character as a partial diva, the most clever businesswoman has the most substance in the storyline (written by Flora Greeson.) The film touches on topical themes like age barriers as well as shows the business is a power in itself but never hits the front. Instead, the title introduces Maggie’s client David (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) as not only another coincidental plot twist but also as a love interest. Additionally, Ice Cube plays Jack who sprinkles some much-required meanness into the proceedings as Grace’s long-time manager.
