Who Invited Them A Sinister Horror Comedy
If you want to watch the horror movie, Who Invited Them, is streaming on Shudder from September 1st, 2022. If you’re a fan of trailers, the “Who Invited Them” clip doesn’t give too much away, but that’s only because the spoilers are cleverly disguised. What I will say about this epic feature film directorial debut by Duncan Birmingham, is that it’s pretty good. It’s fast, fun, and seething with delightful sinister behavior. Just the way we like it.
The title follows Adam and Margo who have left their kid with a sitter and thrown a massive housewarming party. They’ve just moved into a new fancy neighborhood and want to celebrate in a neighborly fashion. The party goes off without a hitch and as the guests start to leave, two remain. Tom and Sasha introduce themselves as their next-door new friends.
Best Horror 2022
The great thing about movies like this is that there is no hiding the suspicious nature of Tom and Sasha. A few moments of sleight-of-hand camerawork during the party, show the two are kind of sketchy. However, that’s what ups the tension 1000%. Bouncing off a couple who are flawed but overall nice, Sasha and Tom could be just what the doctor ordered for Adam and Margo.
The more we get to know them, the more protective we are of their safety. Adam and Margo have a young son, Dylan. The married couple is relatable in their desire to be seen as hip and cool despite having entered the dead space that is life with kids and a mortgage. Adam and Tom on the other hand are more involved with being the devil on both their shoulders and the more they rock the boat, the shakier everything becomes. It’s the chaos that you can see coming. But that doesn’t make it less enjoyable.
Who Invited Them reminds me very much of the title The Perfect Host. Most of the finite details are hidden for a big reveal. I started putting the pieces together about halfway through but was still invested in the type of ending the filmmakers were going to give me. Birmingham’s ability to twist all the background details into the foreground makes for the type of film that is easy to watch while keeping you on the edge of your seat. I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest.
