With a measly budget of only 2 million dollars, the Surrogate movie is a good-looking flick. A haunted tale that follows a mother and nurse Natalie (Kestie Morassi, Wolf Creek) who suddenly finds herself bleeding in the middle of the night. Director and writer David Billing alongside co-writer Beth King delivers a creepy paranormal tale inside the 90-minute runtime. Despite influential horror movies like Ring, The Others, and The Exorcist flavoring the filmmaker’s ideas for Surrogate I instantly thought about other indie gems like The Clinic (2010) and Still/Born (2017) which also dabble in unsolved historical crimes, paranormal, and babies.
The Surrogate sets off on familiar footing and coincidentally the only time we see Natalie at work in a clinic. A strange woman begins tapping on the windows and begging for help. All very eerie, however, I couldn’t stop wondering why a call wasn’t made right there and then. Instead, Natalie goes home which allows for some creepy overhead security monitor scenes as she stops for gas and some gum at a local station. The woman is steadily making her way down a darkened street where she downs some bleach in the garage at the side of the building. Natalie is now available for assistance of course and duly calls an ambulance.
Paranormal Movies 2022
Once home, she and her daughter Rose settle in with some school work. Lovingly gracing the camera with some family anecdotal niceties to ensure us that mother and daughter are appreciative of each other’s presence. In the middle of the night, Natalie wakes to find herself bleeding and in an immense amount of pain before blacking out and waking up in the hospital to find CPS, and her surgeon wants to talk to her. She was in labor and they want to know what she did with the baby.
The Surrogate movie plows through paranormal horror tropes like a father and daughter psychic team, Rose standing at the top of the stairs singing a nursery rhyme in her sleep, and ghostly arms coming out of strange places to set things off kilter. The combination of Natalie investigating what might be happening to her, however, adds a splash of refreshment to what would otherwise be well-worn supernatural horror fare. There is also no holding back when it comes to killing off cast members (scroll down for a death count.)
