Maneater 2022 Shark Attack Movie

A Great White shark makes its way through an island-hopping paradise. A group of friends is faced with their worst nightmare in Maneater.

If you’re a regular visitor of Mother of Movies, you’ll know we love a shark movie or two. The bar is low, but the expectation is always high when it comes to new shark films, and the release of writer and director Justin Lee’s Maneater (Badland 2019) was no exception. Without further ado, I have to say that this shark movie title could very well be my least favorite horror movie for 2022.

To start with, what let Maneater down the most was the spectacularly cheesy and rubbish dialogue. Closely followed by award-winning idiotic decision-making on behalf of the characters. And lastly, some of the cinematography outcomes were what you would expect while watching anything by The Asylum. The transitions from one scene to the next reminded me of when I use a publishing site called Canva, and you can choose what sort of change you want between footage.

From giant sharks manipulating time and space by speed swimming in shallow water to oversized fins coming out of close-to-shore scenes, there was little to be impressed by. Some people who like movies love a schlock fest title, and sometimes I do too (Velocipastor is a favorite of mine.) But sometimes when it comes to shark movies, I just want a little bit of tension, some well-executed scenes, and a good story.

Maneater Trailer 2022

“My daughter was eaten alive by a fucking fish.”

Quote from the movie Maneater (Trace Harkins)

Movies With Shark Attacks

The story follows Jessie (Nicky Whelan), and she’s just gone through the breakup from hell. To ease her pain, her buddies decide she should take the trip that was planned for her and her ex-lover. So Jessie does exactly that. While we watch Jessie and her overacting bestie Breanna sail away with the people she likes best, they talk about sharks. We are treated to the Great White doing its best bite work as it takes out surfers and people with gusto. To be fair in this shark movie, even though it isn’t the best, the kill scenes are not too bad. Filmmakers opted to use what looks like dummies and some shark graphics. I didn’t hate it.

To finish things off, when the young frolicking friends are taken out one by one, Harlan (Trace Adkins, country music singer) does take the loss of his daughter as far as he can. If closing scenes are anything to judge from, I suspect a sequel might be anticipated. In saying that, though, the end of Maneater is ripped straight from the script of Jaws. The title concludes with a reference to needing a bigger boat. And I’m not sure I want any more of that type of thing.

Maneater Lyrics

Just in case you watched this shark attack feature film and wondered why they didn’t use the Maneater song (either Nelly Furtado or Daryl Hall & John Oates would have done nicely. Here are a few of the lyrics to tide you over.

Daryl Hall and John Oats Maneater, watch out boy, she’ll chew you up!
Maneater, make you work hard
Make you spend hard, make you want all of her love
She's a maneater, make you buy cars
Make you cut cards, make you fall real hard in love

The Brooding Lone Wolf

Brooding Lone Wolf character in shark movies | Mother of Movies

You didn’t ask for this. You didn’t want this. But somehow, armed with a harpoon, a grimace, and a slightly damp cigarette, you survived. Congrats, lone wolf, the shark respects you (probably).

  • Chief Brody (Jaws): The sheriff who never asked for a fight, but becomes the reluctant hero when no one else steps up.

  • Nancy Adams (The Shallows): Trapped, injured, and grieving — but still fights a great white with nothing but grit and sheer willpower.

  • Jonas Taylor (The Meg): Haunted by past failures, but when prehistoric terror resurfaces, he’s the only one tough (and stubborn) enough to face it head-on.

The Hotheaded Local

Which 80s Shark-Movie Survivor Are You? - Hot Headed Local

You fought the sea and you fought the shark, and honestly, you fought pretty much everything. Despite the odds and common sense, you lived to angrily tell the tale.

    • Quint (Jaws): A shark hunter with a bone to pick and absolutely zero chill. His vendetta is legendary — and deadly.

    • Adil (Under Paris): A headstrong commander who ignores bureaucratic red tape to protect his city from an underwater nightmare.

    • Carter Blake (Deep Blue Sea): Cool under pressure until he’s not; fast fists, faster boats, and even faster temper when things go sideways.

The Slick Opportunist

Opportunist - Mother of Movies

You didn’t need to be faster than the shark. You just needed to be faster than the people you left behind. Bravo. Morals questionable. Survival? Flawless

  • Jack Morris (The Meg): Rich, smarmy, and ready to spin a prehistoric disaster into a PR opportunity — until karma bites back. Literally.

  • Derrick Jones (Piranha 3D): Exploits chaos to party harder, film raunchier, and profit faster… until the lake turns bloody. Not the sharpest strategy.

  • Oscar (Shark Tale): Claims shark-killer fame to climb the social ladder — the ultimate opportunist, even in animated form.

Marine Biologist, or close enough

Shark Expert

You tried explaining facts to the shark. It didn’t care. Luckily, your sheer panicked flailing confused it long enough for you to be the only one with a device that makes bubbles, so you can make a hasty exit. Science wins again (sort of).

  • Matt Hooper (Jaws): Scientific expertise can only take you so far when facing 25 feet of prehistoric fury. Luckily, sarcasm helps.

  • Dr. Susan McAlester (Deep Blue Sea): Smart enough to genetically enhance sharks, arrogant enough to think she could control them. Spoiler: she couldn’t.

  • Kate (47 Meters Down: Uncaged): Knows how to handle herself underwater — until the situation goes from “science trip” to “try not to get eaten” very fast.

Badass

Which 80s Shark-Movie Survivor Are You? | Baddass on Mother of Movies

You didn’t plan it. You didn’t strategize it. You just… survived. Like some sort of Australian-shirted miracle, you stumbled through chaos and came out a legend. Teach us your ways.

  • Captain Nolan (Orca): Driven by revenge and grief, he squares off against nature’s deadliest without blinking. Complicated, lethal, unforgettable.

  • LL Cool J’s Preacher (Deep Blue Sea): Outwits super sharks with kitchen knives, God, and pure stubborn willpower. Also delivers the best one-liners mid-chaos.

  • Jonas Taylor (The Meg): Jumps back into shark-infested waters without hesitation, usually with an improvised weapon and a bad attitude. The man punches Megalodons for breakfast.
