Writer and Director Joe Begos (Bliss and VFW) is back with a Christmas movie. “Christmas Bloody Christmas” may very well become a horror movie staple for those requiring the type of film similar style to his previous films. Blood, gore, and spatter are on the agenda and Santa is there to dish it all out. If you can imagine something in the realm of what would happen if the Terminator came dressed as a Santa Clause then you have just a small glimpse into what this title brings to the table.
It’s Christmas Eve. Tori and her sidekick coworker Robbi wind up for the night. Tori intends on binge drinking and getting laid by a random stranger she’s been eyeing on a dating site. The two chat with easy familiarity. Something is simmering between them below the surface of an obvious friend zone. Robbie talks Tori into hanging out together and she ditches the Tinder date before heading to a local bar. Both work in a music store, within a mall and they both mention the creepy giant Santa that sits in a nearby toy shop. He towers menacingly in the background as they leave the darkened shop.
The audience is let in on whatever Santa malfunction causes him to awaken from whatever ’80s nightmare he was born of. It’s obvious he’s going to be hard to stop. He stomps around the neon-drenched darkness before zeroing in on his first victims. The gore and special effects are pretty impressive.

Santa’s Slay in Christmas Bloody Christmas
Like Bego’s previous films, Christmas Bloody Christmas is highly infused with dour neon coloring and other flashing lights. The atmosphere is dark and moody. The backdrop of witty and fast conversational dialogue generally comes from Tori’s side to anyone within earshot. At times performances seem a little too much.
For a film with the propensity to be non-stop carnage, the decision to opt for excitable and interesting characters was probably a better choice than splicing this slasher movie with comedy. The narrative is kept suitably below laugh-out-loud gags.
Most of the cast are simply fodder for the antithesis of the jolly man in the red suit. This guy doesn’t laugh like he has a stomach like a bowl full of jelly. Instead, he carries a massive axe aimed to kill anything in its path. Smashed up against the low throbs of synth music, Christmas Bloody Christmas doesn’t choose its victims with deliberate knowing. This killer Santa just mows the small cast down one by one. As Tori gives it her best shot to become this year’s Yuletide final girl, Santa does his best impression of a Grinch. This villain steals lives instead of presents.
Violent Night, Watch it on Shudder Now
Mother of Movies read that Christmas Bloody Christmas was intended to be a remake of Silent Night Deadly Night. Without the green light, Begos reworked whatever idea he had brewing into this version of a new Christmas killer Santa movie.
There’s plenty to like about the energy in this Christmas horror movie. Additionally, I recommend watching Christmas Bloody Christmas with a few glasses of heavily spiked Egg Nog and the Christmas tree flashing in the background.
