If you are unaware of how cattle become beef and the process surrounding it, Kiddo will give you a first-hand look at that. Not by giving in to a forced exploitative front-row seat. Instead, it’s by creating a film that is designed to be a horror story. Instead of showing us the slaughter of animals when they are born and bred to be food, filmmakers Brett Chapman and Scott Milligan created a universe where the cast of humans stands where the animals would normally be.
Far from feeling like a film intended to be propaganda, Kiddo feels somewhat similar to a horror film called The Farm. The intention is to give a voice to the animals we use. In the story for the darkly lit short film, we follow a fluffy-haired woman wearing a dog collar. Treated as a member of the family, a bearded man serves Kiddo at the table before being ushered onto a bus bound for what is referred to as Wonderland. The bus holds lots of people just like her However it is only Kiddo that always returns.
Everyone on the bus is younger than Kiddo. They all wear pink jumpsuits too, only theirs have a QR code on the back. The young pink people sing happily about being idiots. They excitedly await their destination from wherever they have come from. She isn’t supposed to talk to them and sits sadly gazing out the window.
Vegetarian Dog Food For Kiddo
It’s not a straightforward story intended to whack you in the face with agenda. I read a few reviews on IMBd.com and discovered there were different ideas about what the intention of this title was. Horror Buzz saw the short film as a metaphor for Hollywood’s mistreatment of its stars. Warped Perspective leaned more towards Kiddo being designed to make us think about how we engage with our environment. However, it was a review by Horror and Sons that I agreed with in perspective.
Mother of Movies sees the poignant short film as a story about the domestic use of animals. Not only that, but the title also made me think about how we treat these four-legged creatures in the meat industry.
Kiddo is a simplistic story told in a complex way using climactic visuals to make us think about the lives of the animals we control. If you want to see Kiddo for yourself, the short film is currently streaming for free on the YouTube channel Alter.
