Sorry About the Demon 2022, This Haunted House Wants Your Broken Soul
Sometimes horror comedy hits all the high notes. And sometimes it doesn’t. Sorry About the Demon has had plenty of positive reviews stemming from its release at Frightfest in 2022. Now the film is free to watch on the Shudder platform from January 2023 (the 19th to be specific.) Cinerama Film referred to the title as a “light and fluffy comedy” that would “make the perfect date night horror comedy and oozes charm.” And it does.
There is plenty of appeal for this film directed by Emily Hagins (Scare Package segment “Cold Open”.) The story follows Will, who breaks up with his girlfriend and needs somewhere to live. Will stumbles across a family only too willing to help. Maybe too willing if you catch my drift.
The first scene in Sorry About the Demon is a strong open. A young girl suddenly overtaken with a mysterious demonic possession has all the markings of a comedic version of The Exorcist. Her family isn’t all that pleased that their youngest child, Grace (Presley Allard) is now a full-blown host for a low-voiced Demon. Grace’s parents do what any parent at risk of losing their child to the devil would do. And that is, they make a deal with it. They agree to find a replacement human sacrifice for the lustful creature to take to hell. And then along comes the underappreciated, Will.
Sorry About the Demon Is Streaming On Shudder
Will can’t believe his luck when he is offered the deal of a lifetime. An offer that seems too good to be true, Will rents the sprawling gothic mansion from the seemingly innocent family. Desperate to figure out what went wrong with his relationship with Amy he turns to his other true love, baking, to ease the pain. But it doesn’t take long before cupboards fling open and chairs mysteriously rock by themselves, Will figures out he might have moved in with something worse than his failing self-esteem. He decides he has a ghost on his hands.
Sorry About the Demon drops a drizzle of classic horror movie tropes that ease its way into a story that clings to a few different genres. Will (Jon Michael Simpson) is a likable and firm favorite as a character who effortlessly brings the aforementioned charm into every scene he enters. Feeling more like he should be in the latest romantic comedy than sidling up with a mashed-up-faced entity, is what gives this horror and comedy flick an edge of cynicism that works well.
Is Sorry About the Demon Scary?
There is plenty to like about Sorry About the Demon. It’s more of a Goosebumps style of horror rather than genuinely frightening. It’s a fun and tautly scripted narrative that gives The Amityville Horror neatly nestled alongside any sort of Poltergeist film you can think of. Sorry About the Demon is streaming free on Shudder from January 2023 and will scratch that itch if you enjoyed films like A Haunted House or Scary Movie but with a slightly more serious edge.
