The Translations movie is a moody black-and-white production by Keith Wilhelm Kopp. Kopp lends his skill for his directorial feature film debut after a couple of short films (Gage, Turnaround, and Our Night.) This time his subject matter goes deep. Translations follow a young woman, Stef, who found herself unable to leave her home in the throes of her brother’s death. Combining his death with a general foreboding of the outside world her fear became all-encompassing as she clings steadfastly to the idea that she has to “do what she has to” to stay safe.
The story dives in and out of a first-hand view of Stef and what she is thinking, often utilizing a voice-over. And then one day there is a knock at the door. Instead of having to go outside, the outside comes to her in the form of Evan (Alan Emrys), the best friend of the brother she adored.
Evan peeks inside Stef’s life, first as an outsider looking in, trying to fix the broken parts of her that he thinks he can. He tries to heal her with love, affection, and an optimistic viewpoint of the world’s offerings. Between constantly lecturing her on what lies outside instead of inside he slowly works to break down the walls that Stef has painstakingly built.
To Translate Into English
During her hours Stef translates Welsh letters into English and writes poetry. The opening scene of the film features a recurring ideal surrounding a poem called “Walls.” Writing for Stef works in the form of relief and allows her to try and understand her own disorder. She wears the stanzas as a badge of honor, proud of their sinister depth of knowing.
“So elegant and tall, I love my walls”
Quote from the movie Translations from a poem calls “Walls”
“Translations” is performed exceedingly well by its lead plated by Kate Morgan-Jones. Her ability to bring a special metamorphic sentiment to the idea of the walls we as people both build and imagine for ourselves is as special as the title itself. The scripting is well thought out, incorporating an often whimsical dialogue that fuels the romantic nature of the film overall.

Agoraphobia Definition
There are a few films floating around that dabble in agoraphobia. Indie favorite A Young Man With High Potential took a grimy look at the affliction. The horror tile Shirley took a more refined look at the life of a famous writer. The Woman in the Window shows what living your life through the windows of your home can eventually lead to. All these films give us an inside look at what it might feel like to suffer anxiety that leads you to never want to leave the safety of your own home. “Translations” give us another solid character study of a layered and thoughtful look at ways to overcome the obstacles that can often confine us.
The “Translations” drama and romance movie is rated
