Mysterious pasts, screaming babies left in cemeteries to become orphans, and families with dark pasts. This title has all the bells and whistles determined to make it look like it’s about a demonic cult family. You can watch the horror and thriller title, “Leave” on the Shudder platform from March 7th, 2023. The initial release was in Norway in 2022 where the movie was filmed.
From the moment we get introduced to Hunter White and her vigorous sleuthing into all the corners of her life, she is haunted by a shadow. A black figure is often seen lurking behind her. This supernatural angle is as close to describing the horror aspect of Leave alongside Hunter’s dreams as the feature film gets. Hunter’s dreams show fire and lots of other creepy imagery. Putting the pieces together solves the narrative puzzle that is peppered with religious undertones, while slowly uncovering a historical hierarchy that points to something sinister.

“So no one knows about your trip?”
The Grandfather – Quote from the movie, Leave 2022
“Leave” is an evocative film that primarily unfolds within the intimate confines of Norwegian homes. While most of the dialogue is in English, authentic touches of Norwegian language and culture are sprinkled throughout. The movie’s unhurried pace allows for a deep immersion into the storyline. As the plot progresses, it gradually unravels its secrets, culminating in a climactic dream sequence that provides a definitive explanation for Hunter’s experiences. Also laid out are her familial dynamics and the underlying motivations. However, the film intentionally leaves certain elements open to interpretation, withholding absolute answers and allowing viewers to ponder the “why” behind the events.
Is Leave 2023 A Good Movie?
The performances are pretty great, especially from Alicia von Rittberg, who portrays the main character Hunter and delivers a convincing stay. However, one aspect that left me wanting more was the development of the supporting characters. Sadly, they were left unexplored and abandoned in the third act. Additionally, I couldn’t help but feel a bit frustrated by the motivations of some of the newer family introductions.
It seemed puzzling why they would keep such a significant secret for so long. Additionally, and even more perplexing was that outside sources didn’t uncover these secrets more easily. Overall, while the performances were exceptional, certain aspects of the storytelling left room for improvement.
Altogether, Leave 2023 is a nice idea bogged down by being afraid to get its hands dirty.
