Fatale Brings Hillary Swank As A Deadly Femme Fatale

Streaming on Netflix Australia, the UK, New Zealand, Canada, and a bunch of other countries is FATALE. Cast with Hillary Swank in the driver’s seat as a powerful but unhinged femme fatale. Director Deon Taylor (Fear 2023) and writer David Loughery (Passenger 57) valiantly subscribe to adding something extra to your ordinary stalker movie. This time instead of a lonely individual with some massive attachment style issues, we are given a detective strength one. Valerie has more power than the average Joe.

The directorial and writer duo are not unfamiliar with working together. They previously produced The Intruder together which was also cast with Fatales’ Michael Ealy (The Following.) The title was released in 2020. If you are a fan of this type of infatuation meets momentarily scorned storyline, I strongly suggest watching the twisted scenario that unfolds. Far from being a run-of-the-mill trajectory, Fatale pretends that’s exactly what it’s doing in the opening act.

Derrick is an ex-basketballer. He’s high at the top of the semi-famous celebrity hit list. With plenty of cash, good looks, and a healthy career he is suddenly feeling like his wife is drifting away. In a stereotypical wash of entitlement and after an unsuccessful attempt to reignite the passion between them, he heads off for a bachelor party in Las Vegas.

Spurred by his right-hand man, Mike that he deserves to be single for the night Derrick spies a beautiful woman on the dance floor. Valerie (Hillary Swank) is in Las Vegas to blow off steam. After dancing the night away, the two continue their connection in a hotel room upstairs. Rather than making either of the pair look like vulnerable human beings the following morning, both take on a rather predatory persona.

As Derrick attempts to reclothe himself and sneak off into the glaring sunlight’s walk of shame he discovers his one-night stand has locked his phone in the hotel’s safe. Val reveals her purposeful misdemeanor was to prolong their time together. And so begins a playing field insisting that perhaps no one is innocent in this narrative. A manipulative quality inherently reeks from both.

Fatal Attraction Show

Never swaying from its roots as a film about obsession, set pieces in the film will force you to think of some of the best. Fatal Attraction has a memorable freight elevator in its dynamic instigated also by a one-night stand. Here in Fatale, Val also lives in an apartment that features the same style as an elevator as well. Performances are excellent as well as appropriately cast. Swanks’ Val conveniently brings both sociopathic inclinations as well as being a character that is vulnerable as a consequence of terrible life choices. All these things compete with each other. They set a vein of empathy toward her enthusiasm for unseemly acts.

Fatale 2020 doesn’t let up with twists and turns that will make you realize that this is a title easily in contention as an unseen movie gem. There are a few small flaws wound into the production by way of procedural faux pas with a tendency to annoy more than ruin the thriller film overall. My least favorite of the few that I noticed is allowing someone to use the bathroom when in a position of duress.

An often-used trope, in this instance, took away from what was a long-awaited point of retribution for one of the main characters. On the upside, the scene was still executed with a decent amount of action and well-choreographed gunplay so can be forgiven to some degree.

Is Fatale 2020 A Good Movie?

Reviews for Fatale are divisive at best. Many reviewers were either enamored with the movie’s intention like I was or completely lost in what they called predictable and full of loose ends. The baseline should be considered something of a guilty pleasure from either perspective.
