Blur 2023

Andrew Miles Broughton is the writer-director for an Australian Independent feature film called Blur. The tagline boasts that the Demon is real. The story begins with a woman named Sophie (Abigail Bianca). She explores some recently unearthed ruins in Iraq. With some slightly touched-on themes geared towards the war and violence in the country, the narrative doesn’t stay in that area for long.

Shortly after Sophie returns home, strange things begin to happen and Sophie finds whatever she brought home with her has not only awakened but that she can’t escape it. Overtly a slow burn, Blur takes its time splashing out the details of exactly what might be happening. Faulty electricity occurs. Frightening noises are heard. Imagery comes from unexpected places. An affinity to metal is also present.

Immediately, Blur stands out from the crowd of micro-budget productions with stunning photography and some intricately delivered gore. Sophie, in particular, ends up on the receiving end of some pretty graphic and well-orchestrated terror. When news of her death reaches her best friend, Jade, she tries valiantly to figure out what happened. However, the closer Jade gets to uncovering the truth the more she moves towards a similar fate to her friend.

Metal Demons

Despite its decent horror elements, Blur confidently embraces Giallo-style filmmaking, making a striking impression with its surreal and ominously dark cinematography. The heightened score amplifies the visuals, ensuring the film progresses smoothly while keeping viewers engaged from start to finish. The performances are equally commendable, adding to the film’s overall appeal.

This short film was awarded “Best Foreign Film at the Atlanta Horror Film Fest in 2022. For more information on the title and where to watch it next, keep an eye on Blur’s official website. For a taste of what to expect when the title gets some well-deserved distribution, watch the trailer below.

“Inspired by filmmakers like Kubrick (The Shining) De Palma, Argento, and Fincher. I aimed to make an elegant horror film, we shot for a year of weekends on 4K digital and were in sound post for nearly 2 years as it was indie to the core!”
