The Pope's Exorcist 2023

Russell Crowe is a priest. He is charged with exploiting demons’ weaknesses and expelling them from where they should not be. Surprisingly, Crowe makes an excellent priest and is an enticing way to decide that another exorcism film is worth watching. In The Pope’s Exorcist, the story heralds being based on real events. The life and tales originated from a genuine priest who was called Father Gabriel Amorth. There is no speculation surrounding this priest’s existence. However, horror fans are quite used to this ruse by now. Generally, we understand that parts are always embellished in a true story to jazz them up.

Father Amorth was an ordained Catholic priest appointed as an exorcist back in 1986. The real-life figure was told to have performed more than fifty thousand exorcisms. So if the ending of The Pope’s Exorcist left you feeling like sequels might be in store, there are probably lots more stories coming. The 2023 horror movie title follows the generic staple of the possession routine, expelling demons who don’t like to tell you their names. The real Father Amorth has published numerous books about his exploits and, opinions. This is not the only story.

Movies About Devils

Like most films about fighting the Devil and Satan’s ability to reach the innocent, The Pope’s Exocist doesn’t let you forget that a lot of Exorcist encounters generally deal with psychology and mental illness. The title leans into a real conspiracy voiced by Father Amorth in dealing with the suicide of Rosaria. Partway through the film, Rosaria is seen jumping from a balcony.

Her story is explained in depth as a counter to how the Church decides what is a possession and what is not. The most interesting thing about the man behind the movie is that much of his writing is said to be of personal opinion. And although steeped in various anecdotal evidence of demons, possessions, and the fight against evil it’s really up to the filmmakers to tie it all together and try to lure in audiences.

There is plenty to like about The Pope’s Exorcist. The presence of Russell Crowe is front and center as Father Amorth elevates performances. Horror scream queen Alex Essoe takes on the perfect balance of doting mom while being able to be smashed against mirrors and flung about the room with a carefully practiced ease. Peter DeSouza-Feighoney as Henry, makes a perfect unwilling participant in all things occupied by the devil.

Scary Exorcist Movies

With this great cast comes the almost color-by-numbers sequence of just how far an evil spirit will go to stay inside something it shouldn’t be in. but do we mind? Well, kind of. Henry loses weight, gets covered in scratches, and has eyes that shape-shift. All things we have seen a dozen times over. He can run up walls, bend over backward, and cause a bed to bounce around. Filmmakers should start to look at the exorcism films that stand out instead of constantly trying to recreate the things we’ve seen before. Even if this story is supposed to be based on fact.

The Pope’s Exorcist, while well made, exciting at times, and crafted in a way that excels in most areas, there is nothing new here. With so many movies about exorcisms around, the title is good for a one-time watch. It certainly won’t deter me from watching future films about this prolific priest, especially if Crowe comes back to the screen along with them.
