Peppergrass 2023

Peppergrass, a gothic thriller, was featured at the 2021 Nightmares Film Festival. It has been awarded Best Picture and Best Performance during its festival tour. The movie is set during the pandemic and follows Eula, a pregnant woman whose cafe has lost customers due to lockdowns. Eula meets Morris one day and discusses truffles, including the rare and elusive white truffle. Together they aim to steal one and Eula knows where one is.

Morris, portrayed by Charles Boyland, embodies the persona of a hedonistic individual, indulging in vices like cocaine and cigarettes. Eula, played by Chantelle Han, comes across as abrasive, making it challenging to connect with her or Morris. The lack of backstory for both characters further hinders the viewer’s understanding and investment in their travel plans.

Watching two unfit individuals embark on a cross-country adventure to steal a fungus can be difficult to accept and believe. The story lacks plausibility, making it challenging to immerse into the narrative fully. Moreover, the ineptitude of the duo makes it unenjoyable to witness their unpreparedness for the task at hand.

Eula discloses that the prized truffle is in the trusted hands of a veteran, someone she knew through her father. This introduces an element of intrigue and sets the stage for unforeseen developments. While the characters and plot present certain hurdles, a deeper exploration of their backgrounds and motivations could have enhanced the audience’s engagement and connection with the story.

Nic Cage’s Pig Had Personality

In a cabin nestled deep within the woods, Eula and Morris embark on an uneventful journey to invade the home of the mysterious Rob. As they sit in a car, a colossal truffle pig emerges from the dense undergrowth. Aware of the value of the Tuberaceae, Eula, and Morris find themselves contemplating their daring plan to steal from a man skilled in the art of eliminating threats.

As they deliberate on their scheme, the ominous swine stares them down. Its menacing presence casts an eerie shadow. Just as they are caught up in the unfolding predicament, Rob, unbeknownst to them, makes his appearance. Fate twists their intentions as Rob confronts them before they can execute their plans. Eula tells him who they are and emotions run high. Once inside the cabin, the hidden agendas of each turn into a bloody showdown. Despite sounding exciting, the ensuing violence is a sour-flavored event.

The result is a low care factor for the characters’ welfare given their lack of depth and decision-making thus far. I found myself finding empathy for Rob in an attempt to find someone to have compassion for, however, all of the characters are inherently flawed. Either too boring or too annoying, there is little to choose from. Rob is at least a victim of his solace.

In recent times, the pandemic has inspired various narratives in the film industry. It’s often used as a means to work around physical distancing requirements. However, the repeated emergence of Covid-centric plots lead me to sigh in disappointment.

Unfortunately, it seems that “Peppergrass” as a film has not managed to enhance this sentiment positively.

Mother of Movies score

Eula and Morris leave town to rob a World War 2 Veteran of a valuable truffle during the pandemic to survive. Flawed, quiet, and lacking in character depth, the title will suit those with a love of all things survival and pandemic as a general setting.
