Keith R. Phipps’ Horror Show anthology, “Dr. Saville’s Horror Show”, promises an experience reminiscent of the classic Creepshow. This collection consists of three stories, woven together with a wraparound style. However, in the saturated world of anthology horror movies, creators face the challenge of delivering something truly distinctive and cohesive. It isn’t essential to go the extra mile and introduce an additional spokesperson and tale that seamlessly connects all the narratives. The best anthologies can elevate their impact and leave a lasting impression on horror enthusiasts without them.
Sometimes less is more. Like with V/H/S that included stop motion videos created by a character from one of the episodes. In Creepshow, the framing device for the short films is a comic book character. He reads the stories before they play out one by one. In Dr. Saville’s Horror Show, the Doctor maintains an air of spokesperson. He lives in a lair and wears a mask that has no mouth hole. As an intermission between thematically linked tales about ‘being careful what you wish for,’ we are brought back to this torture-centric dungeon. It’s here that Dr. Saville lavishes the audience with his belief system.
Be Careful What You Wish For
As a first scenic tour into thinking about doing things we shouldn’t, Michael sits in a bar alone waiting for a storm to pass. A blonde woman sends a drink to his table and joins him for a drink shortly after. Michael doesn’t take this lady up on her offer to follow her to a nearby hotel. he does however quietly utter to himself;
” I wish I could”
Quote from Dr. Saville’s Horror Show
Deep into the twisted abyss of torment, Dr. Saville embarks on an unrelenting quest to force Michael to confess. Utilizing an array of restrictive and instrumented contraptions, the doctor seeks to trigger his recent experience and unlock his deepest sins. Through the series of short films curated to provoke recollection, Michael is presented with glimpses of Saville’s collection of trauma.

“Consume”
Understandably, the prospect of getting married can be stressful for some. Finding the right partner can indeed be a challenge. It’s important to take the time to find someone who truly connects with you.
As for the bioengineered worm and the pill promising to achieve your desired weight, Anna forgets the crucial approach of caution and dives in head first. Her revelry in the instantaneous results quickly turns to horror when the worm inside her dictates what she has to eat next.
“Consume,” is drowning in inspiration from the works of David Cronenberg, known for his unique style and exploration of body horror. Its incorporation of well-executed gore certainly adds to the visceral experience. However, be prepared for some intense and unsettling moments. The film doesn’t shy away from graphic imagery and crunching sounds.
Just like the dark humor of Sheila’s finger-eating scenes in “Santa Clarita Diet,” “Consume” seems to embrace grotesque elements which only adds to its appeal.
“It’s Complicated”
“It’s Complicated” is the second story in Dr. Saville’s Horror Show anthology. This tale takes a dark turn and explores the consequences of a commitment-phobic bachelor’s impulsive decision.
The story follows Jake, who wakes up one day after a breakup to find a naked woman on his floor. To his surprise, his Aqua Pet has transformed into a fully grown woman. Despite her slime-covered appearance and social ineptitude, Jake is drawn to her dependency and willingness to mate. This leads him to quickly fall in love. In a haze of newfound happiness, Jake proposes to his unusual companion.
However, their relationship takes a horrifying turn when Jake dares to glance at a pregnant woman they encounter during a casual walk. His fish wife’s jealousy and possessiveness drive her to stab the pregnant woman, ensuring that Jake’s attention remains solely on her. With this tragic event, Jake’s life spirals out of control He is left to face the consequences of his impulsive actions and the path he has chosen.
“It’s Complicated” delves into themes of obsession, toxic relationships, and the outcome of making reckless choices in search of love.

As the film unfolds, we witness the father’s resilience and determination in the face of overwhelming odds. Through his unwavering commitment, the story takes a poignant turn, showcasing the power of human strength and resilience in the most challenging circumstances.
Just when you think you have the story figured out, Break delivers an unexpected plot twist that leaves shock and surprise in its wake. The twist takes the heartfelt and downcast journey and transforms it into an unnerving and twisted tale.
While the individual horror stories in Dr. Saville’s Horror Show may keep you engaged, the wraparound story lacks the same cohesion and impact. Removing the wraparound story would have enhanced the overall experience, allowing each tale to stand on its own and further explore the consequences of decisions made.
