Horror films like “Megalomaniac” have a dedicated and enthusiastic fan base. For those who consider themselves true horror aficionados or are drawn to extreme and boundary-pushing cinema, titles like this offer a polarising experience. However, it’s important to note that Megalomaniac delves into intense and graphic content, particularly in the realm of torture and horror. This film may not be suitable for those who are sensitive to such themes. Director Karim Ouelhaj delivers a narrative that explores disturbing scenes. He pushes the boundaries of what some may find uncomfortable. Proceed with caution if you choose to add Megalomaniac to your watchlist. This film promises an unsettling journey into the depths of horror.

With that being said, one of the standout features of Megalomaniac is Ouelhaj’s remarkable talent for creating breathtaking imagery. Despite the often disturbing nature of the subject matter, Ouelhaj manages to captivate audiences with his ability to infuse beauty into even the most unsettling scenes. This film is filled with moments without very much light. However, here it works.

In this gripping and twisted horror, the movie delves into the dark and twisted world of “The Butcher of Mons”. The opening scene sets the tone for the bone-chilling story, based on real events. It offers a glimpse into the infamous serial killer’s background and the horrific crimes that plagued Belgium. As the city lives in fear, the discovery of dismembered women in trash bags shocks the community to its core.

Megalomaniac Is Based On True Events About the Butcher of Mons

Amidst this atmosphere of terror, we are introduced to Martha, portrayed by the talented Eline Schumacher, and Félix, brought to life by Benjamin Ramon. These two characters stand at the center of the narrative, diving head-on into their sinister lineage as the children of this notorious killer. As the movie unfolds, we are drawn into their haunting journey. Explored are the complex themes of nature versus nurture, redemption, and the weight of inherited darkness.

The two siblings, Martha and Felix, reside in a sprawling, dilapidated mansion reminiscent of a Gothic vampire haven. However, unlike the opulent and glamorous estates typically associated with these creatures, their home exudes a somber atmosphere. It’s as though it were a colossal concrete basement. It is within this eerie setting that Felix’s connection to the notorious Butcher of Mons becomes apparent. Under the cover of darkness, he frequently engages in brutal assaults on women. Some of these scenes exhibit such unrestrained ferocity that it becomes difficult to watch. For those with a penchant for the morbid who find sensationalized murders alluring, Megalomaniac will undoubtedly satisfy your darkest inclinations.

Martha’s struggle in the male-dominated factory takes a dark turn as she becomes the victim of brutal sexual attacks initiated by two workers, Luc (played by Pierre Nisse) and L’ouvrier (played by Quentin Lasbazeilles). Despite the initial appearance of protection from her boss, Jérôme (portrayed by Wim Willaert), it becomes evident that his indifference prevails as he cowardly stands by and does nothing to intervene or stop the assaults. The story delves into the unsettling reality of power dynamics and the challenges faced by individuals like Martha in such oppressive environments.

Megalomaniacs’ saving grace for cinephiles like me is the intimate breakdown of Martha’s mental deterioration. A slow and twisted descent is shown in an engaging way that made watching the rest of the film worth it. There is a decent amount of predictability on show; however, despite being initially unsure if I wanted to see the entire movie through due to its nearly two-hour length, I found it highly engaging.

The Megalomaniac movie is being released by Dark Star Pictures and will be in theatres from September 8th, 2023.
