A sequel to the bone-chilling cult favorites “13 Cameras” and “14 Cameras”, brace yourself for 15 Cameras. This time diving face-first into the dark underbelly of our voyeuristic fascination with screens. If you’re a fan of movies about society’s insatiable thirst to watch and be watched, then add this title to your watchlist. With a pulse-pounding pace, this horror movie offering is about our collective desire to live vicariously through the lens of technology.
It’s worth noting the absence of Victor Zarcoff, the talented writer behind the first two films in the trilogy. Initially, I was disappointed. As a devoted fan of both 13 Cameras and 14 Cameras, I remained hopeful writer PJ McCabe (The Beta Test) would handle the reins well. And he did.
Furthermore, the absence of Slumlord Gerald in 15 Cameras. He was brilliantly portrayed by Neville Archambault and I couldn’t help but notice this detail as I scoured the cast listing. Gerald’s haunting performance in the previous films left a lasting impression. I soon discovered Archambault died in 2022. What filmmakers have done is build a world where the saga continues with his likeness. As central characters watch “The Slumlord” series on television, the origin character is reprised through the image of the actor (played by James Babson.) He plays Gerald in the “based on real events” crime series. The series shows footage of the real man. Quite clever really.
15 Cameras Movie
Enter; Cam and Sky who find their dreams coming true. In the right place at the right time, they seize the opportunity to acquire a duplex at an unbelievably low price. Sky’s sister, Carolyn moves in too.
15 Cameras is cited as a film that can be enjoyed even if you haven’t seen its predecessors. More and more of the Slumlord series is shown to the audience while the pair watch it from their living room couch. This allows newcomers to get a recap.
As the trio settles in, Sky notices a white van across the road and becomes increasingly suspicious of everything. Meanwhile, Cam notices her sister. He also discovers a room full of cameras, and from here, his obsession with watching grows.
They conscientiously navigate the rollercoaster of homeownership and the two decide to utilize the downstairs space by getting tenants in to leverage their mortgage. Cam selects the two youngest women applicants. Sadly this did not raise any red flags with Sky. With more people to watch, Cam begins looking into the home’s history.
Hidden Gems Movies
In the newly constructed universe in “15 Cameras”, both Sky and Cam are consumed by their obsessions. Sky becomes convinced that the notorious career criminal might still be alive. Coincidentally, Cam sits where Gerald once did watching while the mysterious white van appears daily.
Keeping its edgy pace 15 Cameras successfully weaves together multiple plotlines. The exceptional performances of the talented cast combined with a script that doesn’t get bogged down with unnecessary details make 15 Cameras an unforgettable addition to the trilogy. Not as disturbing as the previous two films but both die-hard horror fans and newcomers will appreciate the effort.
With so many balls in the air, it was amazing to see the title stick its landing. Director Danny Madden’s vision connected with the soul of the origin films making this a great independent low-budget horror hidden gem to enjoy.
