Pet Sematary Bloodlines, 1 New Horror Movie Worth The Effort

Pet Sematary movie 2023

The newest Pet Sematary movie is Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, which premiered in 2023. If you’ve been following the cinematic re-emergence of the Pet Sematary story, the idea of a prequel would have been exciting news. A story about a creepy place in a small town that has been the epicenter of dead things coming back. The original 1989 Pet Sematary classic film is arguably the best of the set and this film version of the story ties into books by the iconic Stephen King. The previous film adaptation of the novel was released in 2019.

The movie Pet Sematary Bloodlines delivers a tidy explanation of the story’s mythology. There was a certain beauty in watching the lore reveal itself. As a minor complaint, it felt short-lived. I wanted more on the reality of the place that spits out the dead and makes them deader. On the upside, I was glad to see details of how the curse is linked back to a local Native American family alongside some great information on folkloric history which is mapped out quite nicely. And let’s not forget the mention of the iconic Ludlaws curse. There are also some well-executed flashbacks and these help initiate the true history with details we always wanted to see.

There are loads of opinions on Pet Sematary Bloodlines. I watched the film with low expectations. When reviews first began popping up on the internet, the majority gave Pet Sematary 2023 a big thumbs down. Many panned the quality of the title’s scare factor, its pacing, and the fact the book’s ending didn’t mirror the Bloodlines film ending. However, I loved the visuals and atmosphere on screen.

I also don’t agree that the jump scares or effects were weak and I think complaining about digital gore when it’s a movie with a budget this big is quite, simply slightly snobby. Perhaps I’m showing my age being impressed by the imposed impact of the creation of visceral digital images on the silver screen. But I can only say that what I saw, looked good to me.

But the most remarkable aspect of Mother of Movies’ experience watching “Pet Sematary Bloodlines” is undoubtedly the outstanding portrayal of the characters. From the pivotal roles of Timmy, Norma, Dan, Bill, and Judd Crandall, the casting choices were nothing short of impeccable. It is truly impressive to see how perfectly these actors stepped into their respective roles, considering the expectations set for them. In addition, I cannot emphasize enough how much I enjoyed David Duchovny’s performance in this film. I was delighted every time he was graced with a few more seconds of screen time. Jackson White’s young Jud Crandall topped everything off with a memorable and mesmerizing rendition of the Pet Sematary franchise’s most popular character.
