Fingernails 2023 movie

Fingernails 2023 story is about love. The “Total Eclipse of the Heart” type of love. We know this because that’s the song that’s blaring and that’s the song I kept thinking of when I watched this slightly off-kilter romantic comedy with a science fiction edge. In this universe, a test has been developed that can tell you whether your love is real. A great choice for anyone wanting to know whether tying the knot is worth it. Why be shackled to someone who’s not meant for you?

The story lets you in on its big reveal early. Fingernails is full of metaphors and anecdotes about relationships and life. However, “Fingernails” is the price of the test. For the cost of one fingernail, ripped out while you sit across from your potential beloved, you can find out if you should bend your knee before you drop all that cash.

Anna is a school teacher, but despite passing the true love test, her demeanor presents as someone a little bit sketchy on the validity of this so-called love result. As her boyfriend Ryan settles into the routine of how a relationship should look, Anna covertly applies to the company responsible for dictating reassurances that her other half is definitely “the one.” When her secret gets exposed it puts immediate strain on the couple allowing for the perfect setting for Anna to run wild with her theories.

A Dystopian Sci-fi Film That Will Make You Question Your Own Relationships

The more Anna works at The Love Institute, the more she questions the rhetoric that this company can “take the risk out of love.” Fingernails explores the idea of being able to love more than one person at a time for different reasons. It awkwardly shambles around what might happen if technology can confirm our choices are the right ones. Its themes and premise are unique, but the slow pacing really had me struggling to keep investing in the narrative. Fortunately, the film’s casting was exceptionally fitting and where the film lacks in being engaging at times, performances more than made up for it.

Riz Ahmed stars as the unlucky-in-love coworker at the True Love Institute and delivers an apathetic character study in listening to your heart over your head. Jessie Buckley takes her role as Anna and shows us that believing in true love doesn’t necessarily mean the person you are destined for will be yours when you meet them. A smaller amount of screen time goes to Luke Wilson who plays a higher-level executive for the institute, representing the money aspect of how the world revolves around love.

Not a complete time waster, nor memorable, Fingernails is the type of movie you’ll enjoy if quirky epitaphs about romance in fictional worlds are something you like. This is the type of movie that doesn’t leave you in fits of laughter but rather slows the fun down and trickles into darker comedy. The title reminded me a little of “Sometimes I Think About Dying” as well as “The Pod Generation.” Tying in futuristic technology and our everyday lives and solving all our problems one finger at a time.
