Wilderness TV Show

If a trashy mini-series along the same lines as “Dead to Me” or more movies like “Gone Girl” is on your bucket list, then “Wilderness” should be your next binge-watch. Streaming on Prime Video, the 2023 series has 6 episodes that begin with a woman called Liv recounting the circumstances that led her to be in a graveyard. She talks about knowing her husband, Will, having an affair. She goes on to explain that the pair are about to go on a road trip to repair their troubled souls. She also adds that the wilderness is a great place for an accident.

Writer Marnie Dickens is no stranger to the plot points that drive this type of scenario. Previous works for Dickens encompass titles like “Gold Digger” and “Thirteen” as well as darker films like “Ripper Street.” All films delve into the seedy nature of humans without a moral compass. Inspiration for the series came from a novel of the same name by author B.E. Jones and spruiks the notion;

The series Wilderness moves quickly through the paces to eventually land in the death of one of the key cast. The trailer for the Wilderness series doesn’t give away who, so for this review, I won’t either. Liv wants to kill her husband and the rest of the story serves as the reasons behind her engaging in that.

The Wilderness TV Show on Prime

Nothing is ever cut and dry in a story like this. Exacting revenge makes for a great story and here the tawdry behavior of Will is highlighted throughout the series to justify Liv’s progressive behavior. Turning back the clock, the storyline allows for varying reasons. Among the list are all the usual suspects like being a supportive wife, giving up her career, and moving away from her home. Adding further fuel to Liv’s exasperation upon discovering her husband’s lies is the fact she has had to watch her mother lilt away when her father did the very same thing.

Performances are excellent with Eric Balfour, Jenna Coleman, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and Ashley Benson more than propping up the often coincidental plot twists. Like many book-to-screen adaptions, the smaller details are sometimes left out and here the Wilderness show creates some plot holes about relationships between certain characters. I’m certain they were better explained in the novel.

Wilderness has plenty of great volatile moments and enough grit to satisfy the average viewer. On the downside, a lot of scripting feels less polished than its structure. If you can handle the idea that her husband’s lover, Cara, turns up to hike with them randomly on their trip, the series has plenty to offer. I highly recommend this series if you’re looking for something to watch with themes of adultery, revenge, murder, and trauma.

“If you’d seen us, you’d of hated us. This perfect happy couple.

Charming husband, perfect wife. I could finally just be me.”

TV Series With Adultery

Wilderness Show has a theme song from Taylor Swift which adds another reason to watch every episode. “Look What You Made Me Do,” is the ethos that carries the entire plot into chaos. There are several other songs by the same artist.
