Ingress Movie 2024 Explores Love In The Multiverse

Ingress 2024 movie review

Glass House Distribution released Ingress theatrically across the USA on January 23, 2024. The directorial debut of writer and filmmaker Rachel Noll James, known for Don’t Pass Me By. Not only did Rachel Noll James, direct and script Ingress but also delivered a commanding performance as the protagonist, Riley. The sci-fi story attaches its Spiderman narrative web to Riley’s life which is all chopped up in pieces. Riley has an ability that causes her to randomly switch realities.

When One Door Closes Another One Opens

Trapped between her old life before a tragedy and her new life that she can’t seem to stay in. Riley has been popping in and out of several existences since she was a teenager. When she disappeared that first time, the world as she knew it, inclusive of her parents was gone. After that, her new life eventually turned into one of loving and losing a man called Toby. Riley was then hurtled into another condition where her world no longer had any of the things she wanted. Even so, Riley was someone who could survive nonetheless.

And then she finds a man called Daniel who is also someone with a strange ability. Daniel hears the voice of someone called Lucas who is also in touch with alternate realities. They meet, swap notes and soon discover they can help each other figure out who they really are. Two lost souls swimming in a multiverse fish bowl just trying to hold down one reality at a time.

It’s Not You It’s Me

I do know that the director’s statement pointed to this movie as very much a passion piece steeped in real-life events that are personal to Rachel Noll James. I tend to agree that the Ingress film is the type of movie that plants a seed and creates a memorable sentiment that stays with you long after the film ends. Distributors have asked that any Ingress film reviews don’t spoil the ending. Mother of Movies has endeavored to do that here.

The storyline throws in increasing detail about Riley’s life early on that points to a main theme about a journey of healing. Stripped back without the science fiction element and parallel universe setting, narratively it feels like Riley’s travels are a form of escaping the memory of her late husband. She relives it day after day. Without Toby, her new life without him has a giant hole missing from it. The sudden ending caused such a ripple that it never ended, simply spliced off and floated away.

She remembers more and more about this life with Toby while reconnecting less and less with her new life. The boundaries blur until she can’t decide which life is the one she is supposed to be in.

Ingress is held back by several things such as the lengthy runtime (1 hour and 55 minutes) combined with unexciting piques of interest. I had trouble staying invested in Ingress. Performances are consistently on par with the polished production values. Nothing fancy, and enough to not feel cheap. Ingress is a Sliding Doors meets Spiderman and the Multiverse type of movie. But without the Spiderman costume or Gwyneth Paltrow.

INGRESS was the first narrative feature helmed by Emergence Films, the US and UK-based production company co-founded by Rachel Noll James and Sienna Beckman.

What Does Ingress Mean?

The term Ingress is pronounced as /’in.grɛs/ carries primarily two related meanings. The first definition refers to the act of entering or entering into a place or a space. This can relate to anything from a physical entrance into a building or room to a metaphorical entrance, like the ingress of an idea into public consciousness.

The second meaning of ingress deals with the concept of having the power, right, or liberty to enter. This isn’t merely the physical act of stepping in but touches on the permission or ability to do so. In some contexts, this can extend to legal rights or the accessibility that an individual has to a place, system, or resource.

Both these definitions intricately link the term to concepts of access, entry, and the transition from being outside to inside.
