Lowlifes 2024 movie poster

Tubi Original Lowlifes was a last-ditch attempt one weekend to put something random on to watch. It’s easily a new favorite 2024 horror movie. The story is nothing special on the surface as it follows commonly used pivots, settings, and themes. For avid fans of slasher and remote location violence, Lowlifes has more to offer than a familiar feeling. The characters are engaging and dynamically involved in creating empathy for their situations. Effects are a great example of why sometimes less is more if you do it right. These factors alone are the cornerstones of solid horror films.

A tandem union in their first time directing a feature film, Tesh Guttikonda, and Mitch Oliver, the latter having written the solid social media guru horror movie, Influencer. Written by Al Kedron, those who fan girl or fan person over Zombeavers will know he wrote the screenplay for that iconic horror comedy.

Again applying the right dose of comedy to a situation that is anything but funny, Lowlifes sets the scene for a typical hillbilly splatterfest. Husband and wife Keith and Kathleen enjoy a spot of lunch with their children Amy and Jeffrey. I might add here that I could not even try to pick a favorite within the scope of the title. The effective use of the cast of Lowlifes worked so well together in the early phases that it ensured what happens later is believable and enjoyable to watch.

Brothers and Sisters in Lowlifes

Amanda Fix (Orphan Black: Echoes) plays Amy who gets the most attention because her character has the most depth. It’s through her that insight is laid out as to who everyone is and how everything might resolve. But even the ending of Lowlifes will tick many boxes with its ability to dish out an unconventional finale. Josh Zaharia is in the role of Amy’s brother, Jeffrey and he played “a young Butcher” in the TV series, The Boys. If you’re as obsessed with the show as I am that is a clear sign you need to watch Lowlifes. His facial expressions are to die for and his narrative arc was super fun.

There is no way of talking about Lowlifes without spoiling the many plot twists that generate beats of urgency that hit the sweet spot. Mother of Movies intends to go into detail and explain the ending of the film as well as consider why this film works. To watch it now, visit Tubi.com and see it for free online.

Will Watching the Trailer Spoil the Movie?

I watch trailers after the movie. This is a rare occasion where the trailer does not spoil the Lowlifes film. Watch it with caution, but it avoids the bits that make it special.

Lowlifes 2024

Lowlifes takes several elements slasher fans love, mashes them together and add a couple of changes. This is not a title that breaks new ground or skips over boundaries by testing the limits of shocking behaviour. Elements individually can be found in other films. In a similar vein to 2024’s Humane, this title takes into consideration the ethics of human behaviour and what defines them. In this scenario, it’s the innocent middle-class family that are killers. Not only that but they like to selectively eat their victims and only pick who they consider as being blights in society.

As the story develops it’s easy to be swayed by the family they initially judged as worthy of being lowlifes because of how they act, speak, and behave. The screentime afforded to getting to know this remote location hillbilly unit was worth every second. As was the addition of factoring in some coming-of-age transitioning in a thought-provoking look at the teenage years through the eyes of someone raised to murder people.

“I’d rather eat pussy, than people!”

Quote from Lowlifes movie

This is a family who celebrates their frequent kills by enjoying a full freezer at their next stop for BBQ. They keep souvenirs like tongues and eyes in baggies that they hand to their kids as if the packet contains candy or some other sweet reward. The onset of how the cannibalistic family overpowers sizeable people is kept guarded until the perfect moment. The poisoned chocolate given to their premeditated marks is so casual that it’s easy to overlook which made the film unpredictable in the first half.

Overall, Lowlies is a must see for fans of cinema looking for a quick fix of lively underrated horror. For another movie where not everything is as it seems watch Fresh, Creep, or The Midnight Meat Train next.

Lowlifes 2024 Ending Explained

The family poisons the chocolate and gives it to the two brothers Billy and Vern who they run into because they are looking for their other brother Melior. Not known at this time, Melior had already been killed by the family. They head to the house Billy and Vern spoke about intending to wipe the rest of the family out. Most of the family are overly accommodating with only Savannah being suspicious of the interruption.

They poison Big Mac and, Juli Ann who fall sick later that night. Neville is killed by dad Keith. Amy is supposed to kill Savannah but sleeps with her instead and then she figures out that Amy’s phone works and that Neville is dead. Revenge ensues.

Jeffrey kills Big Mac in a violent battle that will make you side with the man of few words. Savannah kills mom Kathleen while they have Juli Ann as a hostage to try and lure her out. Then Jeffrey gets killed and Amy and Savannah fight it out with Keith who eats his own eye.

When the police turn up he shoots Savannah right before she gets a chance to kill Amy. She gets released and is also relinquished of her family and their obligations. She’ll probably miss her mom though.
