Show me, Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway in a creepy-looking thriller, and despite the title, Mothers’ Instinct film gave me what I wanted to watch. Sticking its theme alongside the heavy load of films with similar bones before it, the story follows two best friends. Alice and Celine are like two peas in a pod and are so close they live in houses on the same street.
As a psychological thriller, it’s the type of film that plods along in a subtle but obvious heartbeat. The shocking ending of Mother’s Instinct is what sets it apart from other films like it. As soon as Celine and Alice’s friendship is established on screen, the fact that they both have sons of the same age kicks the narrative in the right direction.
A title that could happily sit on the shelf alongside movies like Roommate, Spoonful of Sugar, or even The Hand that Rocks the Cradle. Watching the blatant takeover, by one person, over another person’s life. The twisted dynamic that forms to enable it to happen. So what happens in Mothers’ Instinct?
Theo and Max are also best friends, so the story digs its heels in when Max dies falling off the roof of Celine’s balcony. Nothing is surprising about the thriller directed by Benoît Delhomme during his feature film directorial debut. It’s a predictable thriller that relies on its excellent casting choices to elevate it and… there’s nothing wrong with that.
Mothers’ Instinct is a remake of a French film “Duelles 2018” that on the surface looks very similar. However by comparing the two films on how they are rated after release, the original looks to be the better of the two movies.

So while it’s easy to see where things are headed most of the time, Mother’s Instinct does get its hands dirty before the closing credits. There’s enough bang for your buck in the final quarter to shock many. Hathaway and Chastain do take up most of the screen time. Fortunately, they are both excellent at what they do and I didn’t tire of watching them.
Their husbands Damian and Simon present merely as an opportunity for a narrative pivot. Having one of the husbands take a pass at the other’s wife, amps up the tension with some malice. Damian and Simon’s intended use, as characters, is given the amount of time it deserves. Played by Arieh Worthalter and Mehdi Nebbou both bring the right level of uncertainty within the ranks of the two couples for the tension to build up plausibly.
Another film to watch that is similar to Mother’s Instinct is The Clinic / Motherly and Surrogate 2022.

What Happens at the End of Mother’s Instinct?
For cinephiles that enjoy gut punch endings, you are in for a treat. Mothers’ Instinct is a simplistic psychological thriller with a great cast that allows for elevated presence on Netflix as a solid film. In the movie, Alice figures out what Celine is up to and attempts to tell her husband about her suspicions.
At this stage, Celine had killed her mother in law and Alice thinks that Celine will steal her son.
Cline felt that Alice could have tried harder to save her son when he was up on the balcony. She killed the mother-in-law because she always told her she was part of the family, but when her son died, she said she now wasn’t.
Even her husband treated her poorlyand felt she was losing her mind. She killed him and made it look like a suicide. Then she gave chloroform to Alice and Theo as well as her husband, and then burns the house down.
At the end of Mother’s Instinct, in the absense of any remaining family memebers to take custody of Theo, Celine has sole custody and leaves to live out her days with him.
