AZRAEL 2024 movie review

Review of Azrael 2024. Set many years after the rapture, Azrael opens with striking imagery: blood dripping down a wall and a cloaked woman painting a faceless blonde figure on an old piece of wood in a lonely church. The haunting atmosphere is enhanced by close-ups of red berries and a faint, indescribable sound in the distance.

“Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish.”

Azrael was released in September in the USA. It followed a screening at SXSW earlier this year. The film features a world where the characters are mute. We meet Kenan, played by Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Mope), alongside Samara Weaving (Guns Akimbo)as Azrael. The two share a tense connection, silently pleading with one another as they are hunted by imposing figures.

Their freedom is interrupted by a brash capture as the two are dragged away. Then they are ultimately separated and transported in the trunks of two dilapidated cars.

In this dystopian universe, the Earth is overrun by creatures known as the Burned Ones—charred, zombie-like beings that consume their victims like vampires. While the lore around their ability to smell blood is somewhat inconsistent, the effects of these monsters are impressive and effectively creepy.

Kenan and Azrael find themselves on the brink of sacrifice, and the narrative leaves ambiguity about whether they were targeted for a specific reason or merely caught in a cruel lottery.

Weaving shines as the resilient Final Girl. Given her experience in action-oriented horror, this role is a perfect fit for her. Throughout the film, Azrael rises from the ashes of defeat, using herbal remedies to heal her wounds and tracking signs of the Burned Ones to evade them.

After escaping captivity multiple times and dispatching a few of her captors along the way, she becomes a fierce survivor. She must find her one true love and rescue him from his fate as food for these creatures.

Azrael Means Angel From God

The film features tension-filled moments, including a scene where Azrael flags down a Spanish-speaking driver while being pursued. This encounter hints that the outside world still exists and raises questions about the monsters’ reach. The appearance of the cab driver challenges the apocalyptic premise. This arena is never investigated, because his appearance is short-lived as he is quickly shot by the antagonistic group. This forces Azrael to flee once more.

The soundtrack brilliantly enhances the film’s eerie ambiance, while the landscape provides a perfect backdrop for the story. The jump scares are nicely executed, never feeling overused, which maintains a tense atmosphere throughout.

Her journey reaches a powerful climax in a showdown with the head of the camp—the pregnant leader—where she discovers a new source of power and seizes control.
