Listen Carefully (2024) Review – A Lesson in Paranoia (and Patience)
Andy works hard for the money. But sometimes working hard just isn’t enough. Listen Carefully (Baby Monitor) directed by Ryan Barton-Grimley.

“Listen Carefully” movie is the latest psychological thriller from filmmaker Ryan Barton-Grimley, taps into the fears of new parents with an attempt at a fever-dream atmosphere. While it initially intrigues, the slow pacing and frustrating character choices make it a less-than-satisfying watch.

The Gist
The story revolves around Andy McNeary (played by Barton-Grimley), a father whose baby is abducted. At the same time, he’s at home, blissfully unaware that his late-night decision to open a window would change everything. The title refers to a baby monitor that takes on a sinister life of its own. It becomes Andy’s only connection to his child. However, instead of building tension, the film takes viewers on a meandering journey of guilt, manipulation, and, oddly, ATM-related crimes.
Promising Start, Flawed Follow-Through
The film opens in the dark, Andy is running from faceless pursuers. It’s eerie and sets the tone for what could have been a relatable exploration of paranoia. Unfortunately, that energy fizzles quickly.
When Andy discovers his baby is missing, the cute owl-shaped baby monitor becomes the voice of the kidnappers, coercing him into a bank heist. This premise could have been engaging. Instead, it spirals into a drawn-out series of one-sided conversations. These conversations fail to maintain suspense or emotional investment.
Daddy Never Knows Best
The quote across the poster is “Daddy never knows best” and Andy’s actions feel nonsensical from the outset. Leaving a window open in a baby’s room while not present…really? His incompetence as a father and as a character drains empathy.

Andy’s internal conflict adds to the frustration. His guilt-driven antics, misguided murder, and dubious money-laundering side hustle do little to flesh out his motivations. Instead, it shows him as a man torn between morality and poor decision-making. However, he lacks the depth needed to make us care.
The Performances in “Baby Monitor” Horror
Barton-Grimley gives a committed performance as Andy despite being mostly unconvincing. The supporting cast also delivers solid efforts. This includes Simone Barton-Grimley as Abby McNeary, and Ari Schneider as “The Voice.” However, the dialogue, at times, feels oddly stilted, bordering on sitcom-style quips. Moments of levity in the dialogue work, but they’re few and far between.
Cinematography and sound design were highlights. The piano and atmosphere were great.
Listen Carefully didn’t tick many boxes for Mother of Movies. However, those who like a fever dream landscape might find it more interesting. They may also appreciate the directional nuance of Lynch and moral dilemmas. Streaming on Apple TV. Find more places to watch below.
