“Luz” A Demon Trapped in 16mm Film

Luz poster, horror movies from Tilman Singer

A debut German-language feature on 16mm film by Tilman Singer. You can watch the Luz movie pretty cheaply through Amazon. For more options on where to watch Luz, Mother of Movies has included a special link below. Luz is not a straightforward possession movie. The narration is confusing and if you go into this with no information, trailer, or otherwise you might not make it to the end. The movie is made in 16mm film, so it doesn’t look like most of the films we see on the big screen.

It’s the way it’s filmed that will keep you hanging in there, waiting patiently for everything to make sense. There is a demonic power at work. It reminded me a little of the Lifechanger movie. Both titles involve an entity trying to get back to the person they love. Luz 2020, is a little more demon-y and Lifechanger is a little more life-sucking but still, there are similarities.

The LUZ movie was officially released in Germany in March and in the USA in July 2019 in Theatres. Available on September 27th, 2019 on DVD and Blu-ray.

Movies About Trapped Demons

Luz is a cab driver. Played by Luana Velis, her part forces you to keep a close eye on her every movement. There are some hypnotizing scenes, one literally with Luz being put under hypnosis. In the opening sequence, they shot it wide and long. In my head, I wondered if this would be a found-footage film. It’s not, but the subtle flicker on the screen, a byproduct of the 16mm film used; resembles that of many I have seen.

In the opening scene, the simple act of this strange but pretty woman (Luz) standing and walking over to the vending machine is oddly creepy. And for no reason at all, you won’t be able to put your finger on why.

At the same time, the second scene is just as creepy. Nora was seated at a bar, the lighting drenched in a blue neon swell of seediness. It’s in their movements Nora that there are touches that something of her. In this situation, she crosses the floor to seat herself beside a doctor, her body moves separately to how you think it should. Her face is unrelaxed as she peppers the handsomely suited man and her words seem out of place. It was early that I didn’t know where the demon was. Was it inside Luz or was it somewhere else?

In any case, the filmmaker released a statement as part of the press release I was lucky enough to receive.

“LUZ is a story about identity, a lack of one, or maybe even denying one’s own. For the most part, this is told by forces (archetypal characters, institutions, or personifications of moral arguments) influencing and manipulating our titular character Luz. I structured the narrative as a panic attack, of repressed memories and confusion. It is purposely open to interpretation by the viewer. “

Finally, that information made me feel a little bit better. Especially seeing I was slightly miffed to have not been given the conventional story I imagined going in. Earlier this year I found Starfish to be the first nonlinear visual and artsy film I truly loved. Even Lynne Ramsay is known for her narratively disfigured movies and she’s my favorite female filmmaker. These films have a very clear narrative structure, however, and Luz leaves you feeling you’ve seen the idea for one.

The Luz movie was made dually as Tilman’s submission project to complete studies including a diploma as well as being the first feature film for the talented director. While I found many of the scenes within this film entirely fascinating I don’t feel like I got what I wanted out of it. I am really looking forward to the follow-up film for Tilman. It’s easy to see that he has something very special.

All things considered, the alternate version of The Lord’s Prayer was a blasphemous tirade of uniqueness I’ll remember for some time. Otherwise, if you value sound and visual techniques you might not have seen before, then definitely check out Luz.
