A Polish slasher landed on Netflix for 2020 with an underrated horror movie titled “W lesie dzis nie zasnie nikt.” Its original title translates to Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight. The film dropped on the platform between March and October depending on your part of the world. Additionally, Poland is not widely known for its horror movies and Nobody Sleeps is a rather valiant and contemporary effort. Especially for the country that boasts approximately 11 horror films in its entire repertoire.
The story follows a group of teenagers. And what’s better than a camp specifically designed to cure you of your drug of choice, technology? A homage to 80s horror, Nobody Sleeps in the Woods comes in hard and fast with predictable kills. As a matter of fact, a mailman sticks his nose somewhere he shouldn’t and understandably loses his head. What’s more, this is the only time decapitation is featured in this story. More importantly, if you’re a fan of the classic sleeping bag scene from Friday the 13th VII: The New Blood, it’s a good indication there’ll be at least one moment you’ll be happy you watched this.
80s Horror Movie Homage
The practical effects are sometimes on the shady side in “Nobody Sleeps in the Woods.” However, this adds to the overall fun side the film offers. Coupled with laugh-out-loud moments slasher fans will get what they need in spades here. By the same token, it throws in some quirky inclusions of classic horror movie rules. Virgin cherries are popped making them prime candidates for slaying and, geeks are used as plot devices to ensure survival. A final girl is selected early on and the scream queen doesn’t have time to do what she probably does best. All the significant cliche roles are represented. This is intentionally a movie I loved to hate with the occasional applaudable moment thrown in.
Final-Girls, Jocks, Pretty Girls, and Nerds Represent
The characters emphatically understand their predicament. They refer to their own quandary within the confines of the movie they star in regularly and we like that. The soundtrack is pretty cool, and the cinematography utilizes its wares well. The monsters are unquestionably like something out of The Toxic Avenger. But this aspect is where I tip my hat. It’s usually in a prequel that we understand our killer’s origins. In Nobody Sleeps in the Woods, our twin killers are given a backstory and this manages to set it apart from being anything but ordinary. All things considered, there are certainly worse ways to spend your time.
Mother of Movies doesn’t know much about the Polish political climate. But I’ve seen dozens of comments about anecdotal use of religious scenes and political references. According to some, it stirs up quite the s**tstorm. According to many, a story about twin boys titled The Two That Stole the Moon is a clear jab at former Polish leaders, who starred in the movie from 1962.
Whatever the case, if a slasher movie with all the trimmings is what you want, you’ll find it all in one package here.
